The University of Toronto’s (U of T) Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme is a fully supported scholarship programme for graduate study at Canada’s top centre for education, research, and knowledge production. One of the top research-intensive universities in the world, U of T is motivated to create new things.

In order to participate in the various healthcare professions and healthcare ecosystems in Africa, prospective academics will build their networks and capacity. After completing the programme, it is anticipated that Scholars will go back to their home nations and start their own businesses or work in a variety of health-related professions to improve health outcomes there.

We will be accepting applications for one of the following fields in 2024–2025:

  • Master of Science in Health Informatics
  • Degree in Master of Health Administration
  • Graduate degree in occupational and environmental health
  • The Master of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences
  • Degree in Master of Health Administration

  • Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering

Eligibility

  • If you are a resident and citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country,
  • you are eligible to apply for the Toronto MasterCard Foundation Scholars Programme.
  • You must be an unenrolled student who is applying for the first time to the University of Toronto.
  • You are not qualified to participate in the programme if you are a transfer student.

You must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the Toronto MasterCard Foundation Scholars Programme:

  • Be a citizen and high school graduate of a Sub-Saharan African nation
  • Exhibit financial need comparable to that of the bottom two quintiles of your nation;
  • Hold a record of leadership and extracurricular participation.
  • Have very high academic standing within your educational system.
  • Have a strong desire to return to Africa in order to contribute to and work towards improved regional socioeconomic development;
  • Possess a diploma from an accredited secondary school or satisfy the prerequisite academic requirements; and meet the relevant English language requirements (depending on the country)

BENEFITS

  • For the duration of their graduate degrees, scholars in the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at the University of Toronto receive full financial support for tuition, travel costs to Canada (including obtaining a passport and visa application fees), housing, course materials, health insurance, a laptop, food, books, and other expenses.

Application

A finished application consists of the following elements:

  • A fully filled out online application, including contact information, financial information, personal information, and answers to the essay questions.
  • Financial records: provide a scanned copy of your financial records.
  • Transcript: Include your secondary school transcript and any other pertinent academic data in the upload.
  • Give the names and contact information for the two people who will be your references. Your referees will be contacted by us directly and asked to submit their letter of recommendation via a secure website.
