The goal of this exercise is to assist THET in identifying potential areas of under-interest in this initiative and to provide an opportunity for institutions that do not presently have a partner to do so.

The Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP), supported by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), aims to strengthen and more resilient health systems for post-pandemic recovery and to advance towards universal health coverage in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Objectives

  • Three goals are part of the GHWP:
  • To better plan for human resources for health (HRH), including better geographic distribution, skill mix, workforce data, and employment, in order to maximise the health workforce in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.
  • To improve retention and training opportunities in order to increase the workforce’s ability to serve in these nations.
  • To enhance the effectiveness of the health workforce in these nations through better policies, regulations, and educational programmes.
  • Although the WHO will primarily be responsible for achieving this goal rather than Health Partnerships, grant recipients will still be expected to cooperate and adhere to WHO policies.

Different Grants

  • The implementation period for small grants will last 12 months, from 1 February 2024 to 31 January 2025. Bids from each partnership are limited to £50,000. Consortia bids are welcome if acceptable.
  • The implementation period for large awards will last 12 months, from 1 February 2024 to 31 January 2025. The bid range for each partnership is between £200,000 and £350,000. Consortia bids are welcome if acceptable.

Approaches

  • Grants for health partnerships will be given in response to national HWF priorities specified and to further one or more of the following programmatic goals:
  • Partnerships that develop the leadership capabilities of the health workforce and are in line with health workforce plans will help to reduce gender inequality.
  • Addressing critical health workforce gaps, supporting HRH efforts, developing or strengthening rules and regulations, or all three are possible.
  • Partnerships that support and contribute to strategies for retention and wellbeing
  • More possibilities for health professionals to receive high-quality training
  • Policy makers and practitioners are interested in learning about effective HWF targeted interventions. They may also be developing or improving curricula, offering new training opportunities in remote or underserved areas, or building the capacity of local faculty/trainers to continue providing training.
  • Creating learning/evidence-based materials is required.
  • Holding or participating in gatherings to exchange evidence, and/or creating or utilising tools to encourage shared learning

eligibility requirements

  • Applications must be submitted by a health partnership that at least has one lead partner from each of the four GHWP nations: the UK, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria in order to be eligible for this call. The cooperation can, if appropriate, include three or even all four nations.
  • Give one of these lead partners credit for holding the contract while designating the other as the co-lead. These key partner institutions are jointly responsible for the project’s ownership and accountability, as well as for writing and submitting the proposal.
  • As long as the guidelines for Official Development Assistance are followed, any organisation is eligible. Please be aware, however, that financing is not available for government agencies.
  • Applications need to: Contribute to the programmatic outcomes of the GHWP in order for the proposed project to be eligible.
  • Include sustainability and local and national ownership in their collaboration operations.
  • Incorporate two-way learning and assess how their project will affect all of their collaborators.
