Context

The incumbent will support the communications efforts of the WHO Regional Office in Africa and the Anglophone country offices in the WHO African Region within the framework of the WHO’s 13th General Programme of Work (GPW) and its triple-billion plan. The creation and distribution of accurate and timely high-quality public information products that promote the successes and outcomes of important public health initiatives and draw attention to the work of WHO and partners in the countries are among the major deliverables. In order to ensure that health challenges, the health response, and WHO’s participation therein are visible among partners, donors, the public, the media, and other important stakeholders, the incumbent will collaborate with colleagues in the regional office and Anglophone country offices.

Under the direction of the Director of the Office of the Regional Director, the incumbent shall perform the aforementioned duties.

1. Conduct research, compose, and edit WHO human-interest, impact stories for publishing on WHO Afro web and social media channels, with an emphasis on Anglophone nations.

2. Conduct research, write scripts, and provide assistance with the video production of WHO impact and human-interest stories with an emphasis on Anglophone nations for posting on WHO Afro web and social media channels.

3. Create high-quality English-language news releases, social media posts, talking points, and other communication pieces for publishing on WHO Afro internet and social media channels.

4. Assist in enhancing the ability of Anglophone country offices to create impact stories for the WHO that are high-quality multi-media (text, photo, and video).

5. Keep an eye out for story possibilities by monitoring and critically examining the websites and social media accounts of Anglophone nations, and follow up with country offices to create impactful content for the WHO Afro online and social media platforms.

6. Arrange photo and video shoots in anglophone nations to provide high-quality images and video footage for social media posts and WHO Africa impact stories.

7. Use a smartphone to capture high-quality images and videos for posting to WHO Afro’s online and social media platforms.

8. Assist conferences, official country visits by the Regional Director, or any other significant events in Anglophone nations with external communications.

9. Any other pertinent work that is needed for this project.

necessary expertise

  • three years of experience working as a communications officer or journalist for a multinational, national, or international organization. Computer expertise is required. Desirable: Excellent MS Office expertise good familiarity with photo and/or video editing programs proficiency with graphic design software proficiency with web publishing software

  • English fluency level: need French, Working knowledge, desirable level Working knowledge of Portuguese is desired.

  • The equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, international relations, literature, history, social science, or a related field. Desirable: knowledge of or experience with graphic design, photography, or videography
