Through a coordinated and shared set of interventions, The Great Green Wall (GGW) is an African endeavour to halt and reverse trends in land degradation, desertification, climate change, and loss of biodiversity, particularly in the arid parts of Africa. An effort to combat land degradation, desertification, and climate change in the Southern African region is the Southern African Development Community (SADC) GGW. The African Union Commission and the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (SGP) have joined forces to create the Great Green Wall Innovation Programme.

The initiative’s goal is to provide financial assistance for creative community-led projects that will support the GEF-SGP’s Operational Phase 7 (OP7) strategic framework and the SADC’s GGW plan. The goal of the GGW Innovation Programme is to show examples of linked community-led projects that actively encourage participation from women, young people, and non-state actors (civil society organisations, or CSOs) in the implementation of the GGW Initiative plan.

In areas where the soil is unproductive, the rains are erratic or insufficient, and the men have migrated in search of work, leaving the women behind to earn additional incomes through agriculture and related activities, women and youth play a critical role in supporting the health of farms and livestock. They are increasingly involved in land and water management and act as collectors of water and fodder. While women’s access to information about land management is sometimes limited, working with women’s and youth organisations is crucial to ensuring that innovations and best practises developed through initiatives led by women can be scaled up through partnerships and have an impact on policy.

Priority Activities and Themes

  • The SLM and SFM Innovation Program’s top themes and initiatives will be:
  • Food safety
  • Utilising more efficient agriculture methods to diversify diets while preserving finite resources.
  • Encourage smallholder households to adopt nutritionally beneficial practises, so assisting them in producing and consuming wholesome foods that are cultivated nearby.
  • Agroforestry and agriculture with climate resilience
  • empowering young people and women in agricultural value chains that use fewer resources
  • improving women farmers’ practises, decisions, and worries in the areas of seed production, agrobiodiversity, sustainable farming methods, and resource management
  • increasing resilience to climate shocks and improving nutritional results by diversifying output to include a range of foods.
  • SFM and SLM are two terms for sustainable land management.
  • Restoration and management of community forests
  • Using agroecology to produce and gather food
  • Young people developed user-friendly technology for water management to assist farmers.
  • Influence on policy, advocacy
  • Documentation of new ideas, best practises, and lessons discovered as a result of the initiatives that were financed that were community-based, led by women and young people.

Financial Details

  • The award amount will range from $5,000 to $50,000 for the budget. When approving the grant amount, the CBOs/CSOs’ ability to implement new ideas and their suggested ideas will both be taken into account.

Project Timeline

  • The planned project’s duration should not be longer than 24 months.

Criteria

  • The GEF-SGP requests concept papers from qualified organisations using the provided template. To make sure the project idea is pertinent, creative, and inclusive, they strongly advise proponent organisations to involve the communities in the concept paper creation. The concept idea ought to be in line with the GGW strategy and the SGP OP7 Country Programme Strategy.
  • The GEF-SGP strongly promotes and fosters partnerships between organisations and groups. Community organisations with less experience are invited to participate in SGP activities with the assistance of a more seasoned local or national NGO, who will serve as mentors and partners. Only organisations with two years of experience as of the registration date will be taken into consideration.
  • It is essential that women and young people are effectively involved in carrying out the GGW Innovation Programme. Leaving No One Behind is a principle that CSOs and CBOs interested in applying for this funding should focus on, thus local residents and people with disabilities should also be involved.
