The “field-initiated” nature of this programme means that proposals aren’t being submitted in response to requests for a particular study topic, discipline, design, methodology, or location.

Financial Details

  • The Small Research Grants on Education Programme supports education research initiatives with budgets up to $50,000 for studies lasting one to five years that would improve education broadly considered. A course release may also be requested from additional supplemental monies by qualified investigators. Three times a year, applications are accepted.

eligibility requirements

  • Academic research initiatives with the goal of studying education must be the focus of proposals to the Research Grants on Education programme. Submissions for endeavours other than research, such as programme reviews, professional development, curriculum development, scholarships, and capital projects, are not acceptable. Additionally, research study suggestions that are not related to education are ineligible.
  • An acquired doctorate in an academic discipline or professional field, or sufficient experience in a profession connected to education research, are requirements for Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-PIs applying for a Small Research Grant on Education. Graduate students are allowed to participate in the research team but cannot be listed as the principal investigator (PI) or co-principal investigator (Co-PI) on the proposal.
  • If the grant is awarded, the PI must be connected to a non-profit or public/governmental entity that is willing to act as the administering organisation. The Spencer Foundation does not give money to people directly. Examples include non-profit or public institutions, universities, school systems, and research centres, as well as other non-profit groups with an IRS designation of 501(c)(3) (or comparable non-profit status if the group is located outside of the United States).
  • International and American applications are both welcome, however all must be submitted in English, and budgets must be presented in US dollars.

Ineligible

  • According to Spencer’s policy, proposed budgets for this programme may not contain indirect cost charges and may not exceed a total of $50,000. A course release may also be requested from additional supplemental monies by qualified investigators.
  • The suggested projects may not last more than five years.
  • PIs and Co-PIs are limited to having one Spencer Foundation active research grant open at any given time. Organisations are free to submit as many applications as they would like as long as they are for distinct projects and involve distinct research teams; this restriction does not apply to the administering organisation.)
  • PIs and Co-PIs are only allowed to submit one research proposal at a time to the Spencer Foundation. The Small Grants Programme, the Large Grants Programme, the Racial Equity Research Grants Programme, and the Research-Practice Partnership Programme are all subject to this restriction. If the principal investigator (PI) or any of the co-principal investigators (Co-PIs) currently have a research proposal under review in any of these programmes, they are required to hold off on submitting a new proposal until a final decision has been made on the pending proposal.
