For articles from and about Africa that were published or broadcast in African media between June 1, 2022, and June 1, 2023, any journalist or team of journalists working in any media is eligible to receive the award.

Entry deadline is September 15, 2023, at 14:00. The prize presentation will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from November 20–22, 2023.

The laws

  • The Prize honours the outstanding example of investigative reporting from and about Africa for the fiscal year that ended in June. Any journalist or group of journalists working in any medium may receive the Award. The award may be given for a single story or a collection of stories that were published or broadcast in Africa the year before.
  • A panel of judges will select the winners, and they will have the freedom to establish any criterion they see fit. They will consider the following:
    • The novelness of the narrative and the revelations it offers
    • The research that was done, especially with originality, perseverance, or courage
    • The significance of the narrative, particularly in terms of public service
    • A journalist cannot be a part of more than two entries, nor can a news organisation. There can be no more than five stories in a single entry.

Please carefully read the How to Enter section below to avoid getting disqualified for breaking the rules.

Application

Send the materials listed below, along with the entry form, to AfricaIJAward@gmail.com.

Entries need to contain:

  • A digital copy of the entry materials as they were printed or broadcast. The original must be accompanied by a readable Word or PDF version if it has been shrunk in size.
  • Each entry must include a high-resolution photo and a 100-word bio.
  • An enhanced version of the publication’s or broadcaster’s
  • A brief justification for the entry (maximum 500 words), including any background the judges should be aware of, an indication of the story’s impact, and details of any significant challenges to the entry’s accuracy or fairness, such as letters that have been published, corrections that have been made, retractions that have been made, formal complaints that have been made, or court cases. Judges should be made aware of the finer points of the investigation, such as the obtaining of elusive documents or creative problem-solving, as these motivations are crucial. The judges are interested in the story’s originality, context, and effect as well as the careful planning and risk-taking that went into it.
  • For publicity purposes, broadcast entries must also include a transcript and a brief video clip of the story.
  • Do not include information from outside the competition’s time limit, though you may mention it in your motivation when it is pertinent.
  • A translation for entries in languages other than English would be advantageous but is not required.
  • Late submissions won’t be allowed. Within 72 hours, participants will get an acknowledgement of their entry.
