For the Melvin M.S. Goo Writing Fellowship 2024, applications are now being accepted. A journalist, author, or writer from China or the United States will receive financial support from the Melvin M.S. Goo Writing Fellowship for a project that will improve relations between the two nations. The Melvin M.S. Goo Memorial Fund has generously endowed this East-West Centre fellowship.

Before his death in 2016, Melvin M.S. Goo was a seasoned journalist with a 34-year career spanning both Asia and the United States. Mr. Goo worked for The Honolulu Advertiser for 18 years as a reporter, editor, and editorial writer. He was born in Macau and completed high school there. He received the renowned Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University in 1977.Mr. Goo continued his career in Asia, eventually becoming Editor-in-Chief at Taiwan News and Chief News Editor at The Nikkei Weekly.

Funding

Financial assistance of up to $10,000 will be offered.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must be citizens or legal residents of either the People’s Republic of China or the United States.


The endeavour:

  • Application materials must be provided in English, although content may be produced in either (or both) English and a Chinese language variant.
  • Must be released or otherwise made accessible to the public in China and/or the United States; possible formats include print publications, print or online journals, etc.
  • Projects that have already been completed or published will not be taken into consideration.
  • By the end of 2024, it must be finished and delivered (i.e. published or disseminated).


Selection Standards

  • A Selection Committee assembled by the East-West Centre will assess proposed projects based on a number of factors, such as:
  • How the planned effort will help Americans and Chinese people better understand one another.
    a main emphasis on underreported feature subjects (such cultural issues, lifestyles, education, youth, the arts, etc.).
    any components, particularly rhetoric that is polarising or inflammatory, that are at odds with the Fellowship’s goal.
  • Whether the project’s intended audience is large enough and/or important enough to support the mission of the Fellowship.
    assurance that the project’s sources are well-rounded, trustworthy, and knowledgeable.
    impact and originality.

Application

To be taken into consideration, applicants must submit each of the following records:

  • The application for the Goo Fellowship online.
  • Project Proposal, no more than six pages.
  • A curriculum vitae or a résumé.
  • A minimum of three (3) examples that best describe your earlier work (such as writing samples or a digital portfolio).
  • Two (2) expert witnesses who can write letters of endorsement.
