In April 2024, a final in-person workshop will be held after a series of online training sessions in which 12 journalists have been chosen by EJN. As they conduct their research and probe their topics, they will be carefully supervised by subject-matter experts and get story funding as well.

Overview

  • After trafficking in narcotics, people, and weapons, the illegal wildlife trade is estimated by the United Nations Office on narcotics and Crime to be worth roughly 23 billion dollars annually globally. Wildlife crime and trade, which are common in East Africa as a source and transit region, endangers not only the survival of flora and fauna but also the environment, security, the economy, and public health.
  • According to the Financial Action Task Force Report on Illegal Wildlife Trade, 2020, the nature of these crimes involves a complex transcontinental chain that links poachers to transporters to exporters to processors to wholesalers to retailers to end users in countries like China, Vietnam, and Thailand. Many of the source countries for these crimes are in Africa.
  • Indeed, according to Interpol, transnational organised criminal networks that are also involved in the trafficking of drugs and money laundering are in charge of the routes used to smuggle wildlife, wildlife body parts, and/or derivatives across national borders and continents. The EJN’s East Africa Wildlife Journalism project is offering a nine-month training course called Following the Money to Combat Environmental Crime to prepare journalists to look into and expose these crimes.
