The ETH for Development (ETH4D) Doctoral Mentorship Programme 2023 is now accepting applications for its fourth round. For the purpose of guiding PhD candidates from low- and lower-middle-income nations, the ETH4D offers funding.

The mentorship consists of the following elements and is a one-year appointment:

  • one year of doctoral studies under the guidance of one ETH professor, senior scientist, or postdoc. They recommend regular meetings every month and clearly stated project objectives, such as a presentation at a conference or a joint publication. Although it is not necessary, ETH mentors are free to participate in the mentee’s doctorate committee.
  • For 1-3 months throughout the mentoring period, do research at the mentor’s lab at ETH Zurich, Switzerland.
  • funding for conference attendance and/or supplies for research.

Benefits

The following expenses are covered by the grant, up to a maximum of 15k CHF:

  • a cheap roundtrip flight to and from Switzerland for the duration of the research stay (maximum 2 kCHF).
  • Visa costs
  • Travel expenses to attend an academic conference Research supplies, such as lab equipment, up to a total of CHF 6,000.
  • Health insurance premiums
  • regional transit
  • Accommodation
  • Living expenses during the researcher’s time at ETH Zurich

Eligibility

Doctoral candidates who are enrolled at a university or research facility in any nation on the DAC-list of the OECD, with the exception of upper-middle-income nations, are eligible.
The ETH faculty housing the PhD applicant must submit the application. Applications submitted directly by the PhD candidate won’t be taken into consideration.

Application

All application materials must be electronically submitted in English:

  • (Download template) Budget
  • Description of the project (see criteria paper for issues that must be resolved)
  • One page long PhD candidate’s letter of motivation
  • most current transcripts from universities
  • CV of doctorate applicant, with publications, no longer than two pages
  • two academic recommendations
  • (If applicable) A proposed doctoral project
  • ETH professor’s letter of support, which must be signed by both the mentor and their professor if the mentor is a senior scientist or postdoc and includes any monetary and in-kind gifts.
  • All application materials must be typed up electronically and written in English.
