In order to create more equitable, sustainable, productive, and climate-resilient food systems, the CGIAR Generating Evidence and New Directions for Equitable Results (GENDER) Impact Platform intends to stimulate research on gender in agriculture and food systems.

The GENDER Impact Platform’s Evidence Module is accepting submissions for a study that examines the collectivization of women in the MENA region. They are particularly interested in research that might compare the collectives of women in MENA’s agri-food systems to those in South Asia. The South Asian region has a history of mobilizing small groups of women for goals that range from improved access to resources and finance to resilient agriculture and food security. Additionally, they have shown their value in advancing women’s agency and gender transformative change in a number of sociocultural contexts. The study is anticipated to shed light on the sociocultural settings of the two areas and offer suggestions on how the lessons learned from South Asia could be effectively utilized in MENA.

The “Women’s Collective Action in Agri-Food Systems: Processes, Outcomes and Learning from MENA and South Asia” research project will receive funding from the “Evidence Module” in order to generate evidence using appropriate, rigorous, and cutting-edge quantitative and qualitative methods and tools.

Grants

Through a competitive selection process, one grant worth a maximum of USD $150,000 will be given. The funding will last a maximum of 15 months and is expected to begin in September 2023.

Eligibility

Applications need to meet the following eligibility requirements and be managed by a CGIAR Center:

  • Show that you can carry out research on the suggested topic to the highest level possible according to international standards.
  • Establish robust and equitable collaborations across the CGIAR, particularly with partners from low- and middle-income nations (LMICs) and national agricultural research systems (NARS). Through management and scientific contributions, capacity building, and learning exchange, proposals must blatantly demonstrate genuine, collaborative partnerships. A clear explanation of the value that results from combining complementary skills and partnerships is required. All identified researchers must have duties and responsibilities that are well-defined.
  • Display a connection to at least one of the following impact areas: nutrition, health, and food security; poverty reduction, livelihoods, and employment; climate adaptation and mitigation; and environmental health and biodiversity; in addition to the CGIAR impact area of gender equality, youth, and social inclusion.
  • Applications may be led by or contain CGIAR Centers more than once. The preference will go to centers with a presence in the MENA area.
  • Application submission is open to all CGIAR centers.
  • Although they cannot be lead centers, ICRISAT, CIFOR, and ICRAF can be partners.
