The A Sea of Words International Short Story Contest 2023 is currently accepting applications. The European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), in association with the Anna Lindh Foundation, established the A Sea of Words competition in 2008. This initiative aims to unite the voices of young people on issues that matter to and have an impact on them within the context of Euro-Mediterranean discourse.

Every year, the emphasis is on a problem that confronts young people today. This literary competition promotes the exchange of thoughts and analyses on the themes put forth through creative writing. Young people can give their unique and literary perspectives on common topics and realities by using unpublished and original manuscripts to recount real or imagined experiences. The 10 authors of the top stories, chosen by an international jury, will be invited to Barcelona on November 8, 2023, to take part in the awards ceremony, workshops, and cultural exchanges over the course of three days. The winners this year will take part in a workshop to brainstorm and create ideas for the following edition.

Artificial Intelligence and Youths: Ethical Commitment and Critical Thinking” is the theme of the literary competition’s 16th iteration.

Benefits

The authors of the top ten writings will spend three days in Barcelona beginning on November 8, 2023, taking part in an awards ceremony, artistic workshops, and cross-cultural interactions. A book containing their works will also be released.

Eligibility

  • Open to young people (18–30 years old) who are citizens of or have their primary residence in one of the following 43 Euro-Mediterranean nations: Albania, Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Latvia, Lebanon, Libya, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Mauritania, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco,
  • The text’s 2,500 word limit is the absolute maximum.
  • Those who were chosen in any of the earlier editions are ineligible.
  • The material needs to be emailed to concurso@iemed.org in Word format. The title of the work and the author’s contact information—name, phone number, address, email, and date of birth—must be included in the message.
  • The chosen works will be released as a digital book that includes both the original texts and their matching English translations.
  • Originality is required, and the story may be written in any of the 43 official languages of the Euro-Mediterranean region. Each author may submit just one item.
