The Fellow will be supervised by Durham University and have access to academics and research resources while being mentored by editors at Reuters or other media partners. The purpose of this Fellowship is to provide the Fellow with the opportunity to hone rigorous, fact-based research and reporting abilities. The Fellowship offers the chance to cultivate concepts and partnerships while receiving support from top scholars in a vibrant community of journalists. The 2024 Fellowship is intended to start as soon as feasible after March 1, 2024, provided that all applicable immigration conditions are satisfied.

Durham University will hire the chosen candidate to work as a Fellow in the Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS). The Fellow will be expected to find and develop a network of scholars within the University to support their investigative journalistic practice, with the assistance of peers in the IAS. The Fellow will present a public seminar at the IAS to share their insights from the Fellowship and advance the University’s understanding of journalism.

Benefits

  • The Fellowship receives a pro-rata income of about £53,333 per year, or about £4,444 per month. Additionally, there is a living allowance of £1,250 per month and a one-time payment of £1,800 for travel and associated costs.
  • If the chosen candidate is already employed by a news organization or media outlet and takes time off to pursue the Fellowship, Durham University will, under certain conditions, reimburse their present employer up to a maximum of £12,000 to cover temporary staff costs.

Eligibility

  • Early-career journalists, who typically have between two and five years of professional journalistic experience, will be qualified applicants. Applications may be taken into account on a case-by-case basis when a prospective applicant is not currently a journalist but has experience in investigative reporting in a related professional field (for instance, leading human rights or other socio-political publications and campaigns; working as an author or researcher on reputable investigative work; developing in-field photo- or video-research projects, documentaries, or exhibitions).
  • Applicants from anywhere in the world are welcome to submit an application for the Sir Harry Evans Fellowship, regardless of where they currently reside. Members of underrepresented groups in journalism are encouraged to apply.
  • The Fellowship Committee will have the last say as to where it will be completed; options include Toronto, New York, or the UK. The chosen candidate must adhere to all relevant immigration laws.
