Applications open for the Gulbenkian Foundation Prize for Humanity 2023. Given out annually, the prize honors individuals, groups of individuals, and/or organizations from all over the world. More so, whose contributions to climate change adaptation and mitigation stand out for their originality, innovation, and significance.

The Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity dedicated to honoring achievements and efforts made in the fight against climate change. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation takes into account any prospective areas for acknowledgment that can help to lessen the effects of climate change and/or help people adapt to them.

This effort aims to raise awareness of and use large-scale climate action solutions, accelerating the process of the global economy’s decarbonization, safeguarding people and natural systems from the severe effects of climate change, and promoting sustainable development.

Award
  • The annual Gulbenkian Foundation Prize for Humanity 2023 is worth €1 million. If more than one laureate is recognized, the prize will be evenly distributed.

Eligibility

  • Candidates should be a person, group of people and/or an organization, of any nationality.
  • Making a significant contribution to develop solutions to tackle the climate crisis, having to demonstrate the reach or potential reach of outstanding outcomes and provide highly relevant evidence for impact in the future.
  • The Award cannot be given posthumously, to an organization that has stopped operating, or to previous members of the Prize Jury.

Eligible organizations include:

  • Legal entities, public or private, profit-seeking or non-profit;
  • International organizations;
  • Universities and R&D institutions
Nominations
  • Self-nominations not accepted; applications filed through the nomination of third parties.
  • By following the guidelines presented, all nominations must be submitted electronically by March 17, 2023, using the form found at gulbenkian.pt.
  • In addition to the documents supplied on the application page, the jury may ask for other details.
