Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development

The Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND) awards the US$ 1,000,000 Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development each year in an effort to promote and stimulate innovation and creativity in human development. The AGFUND’s strategy for boosting development performance and assisting important development initiatives in order to accomplish the objectives of sustainability and people investment gave rise to the concept for the Prize.

The award has been known as the AGFUND International Prize for Pioneering Human Development Projects from its founding in 1999. The AGFUND Board of Directors chose to rename the prize in honour of His Royal Highness Prince Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, who founded the organization, when he passed away in December 2018. This choice was made in remembrance of his tireless commitment to advancing human development and reducing poverty via the founding of AGFUND and other organizations. The Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development is the new name of the prize.

Concept for the Award

The purpose behind the Prize is to encourage efforts to achieve sustainability in development and investment in people. It is modelled after AGFUND’s approach to improve development performance and support significant development projects.
In this regard, the Prince Talal International Prize has emerged as a preeminent framework for identifying and rewarding development projects that succeed as well as for sharing their creative ideas in order to maximize the enhancement of development efforts. In order to strengthen the mechanisms of development cooperation and project funding, it is also a creative approach and a strategic tool to exchange successful experiences. Particular attention is given to the most important factors that impede development and negatively impact vulnerable populations, especially women and children in developing nations. These include socioeconomic marginalization, poverty, social isolation, health, and education.
