SUMMARY OF THE POST’S FUNCTIONS

  • The incumbent will serve as the Director of the UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for East Africa in Nairobi and the UNESCO Representative in Kenya, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, and Uganda. They will report to the Director-General and be directly under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director-General for Priority Africa and External Relations (ADG/PAX), in close consultation with the Assistant Directors-General of the five program sectors and with the Directors of the other UNESCO Regional Multisectoral Offices in Africa for project planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting.
  • The position will be held within the parameters set forth by UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategies (C/4s), authorized Programs and Budgets (C/5s), the Priority Gender Equality Action Plan, the Operational Strategy for the Implementation of Priority Africa, and the International Development Agendas, including Agenda 2030 and Agenda 2063, with special attention to their regional and sub-regional aspects.
  • The position will be in charge of the Heads of the UNESCO National Offices in Juba (South Sudan), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), and Dar es Salaam (United Republic of Tanzania).
  • Positioning UNESCO as a reliable development partner in the countries covered by the Office (Kenya, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania) and promoting integrated sub-regional approaches is the primary outcome, for which the incumbent will be accountable. The development and implementation of the Office’s multidisciplinary program in close collaboration with the larger UN system, the management of the Office’s operations, resources, facilities, and assets effectively and efficiently, and the creation and maintenance of strong external partnerships and relationships, such as those with the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), are additional outcomes.
  • Additionally, the incumbent will take part in or guarantee the Office’s involvement in UN activities in Kenya and other countries under the Office’s purview, both nationally and regionally.

IMPORTANT QUALIFICATIONS

Instruction

  • a Master’s degree or its equivalent from an advanced university in a topic relating to public or business administration, international relations, or UNESCO’s mandate.

Experience at Work

  • At least fifteen (15) years of steadily increasing professional experience at the suitable management level gained from working for the United Nations system or other international, national, or private sector organizations. This experience should include extensive knowledge of development issues and diplomatic work pertaining to UNESCO’s areas of expertise, as well as experience working with national and international organizations.
  • proven track record in resource mobilization and lobbying.
  • a track record of establishing partnerships that has been successful at the local, national, and international levels.
  • professional background in communication, education, science, culture, or the social sciences.
