Objective of Work

  • The Africa CDC Reference Laboratories Division’s biochemistry operations will be overseen and managed by the Principal Scientist for Biochemistry. In Africa, she/he will be in charge of supervising the creation, application, and assessment of biochemical protocols and standards for the detection, tracking, and investigation of infectious diseases and public health emergencies. In addition, the Principal Scientist for Biochemistry will advise and assist the network of National Public Health Institutes and Africa CDC Regional Collaborating Centers on matters pertaining to biochemistry.

Principal Tasks

  • Assume a technical and intellectual leadership role in overseeing several aspects pertaining to the area of competence.
  • Assist in the creation of the business continuity plan and strategy, and take part in or guarantee their execution.
  • Encourage and oversee the execution of initiatives according to the area of expertise;
  • Assist in setting up subject networks, meetings, and consultations on international relations and development cooperation.
  • Create resources, and as needed, give Organization Units the support and training they need.
  • As needed, offer technical advice on issues pertaining to system review and implementation projects in specialized fields.

Particular Obligations

  • Oversees the CDC/AU continental initiative in Africa to improve laboratory networks and processes.
  • Oversees the creation and execution of programs to upgrade laboratory facilities and introduce more advanced technology to increase laboratory capacity throughout the continent.
  • Oversees and directs initiatives to help nations create national laboratory strategies and policies that include harmful microorganisms.
  • Creates, executes, and assesses programs and projects; additionally, offers consultancy and professional scientific guidance to assist laboratory research and development initiatives within agency programs aimed at enhancing laboratory capacity to address diseases of public health significance.
  • Oversees the development of networks and systems (quality, standards, and biosafety) that are connected to clinical treatment and disease surveillance in the public and private sectors.
  • Encourages and directs the establishment of an extensive system for managing laboratory quality, which includes laboratory accreditation.
  • Encourages and directs laboratory studies and research on new or enhanced instruments and technologies for control, definition, diagnosis, preventive, and research.
  • Expands RISLNET’s ability to apply cutting-edge molecular technologies, surveillance networks for pathogen genomes, multiplex detection tests, and other sophisticated diagnostic techniques and instruments.
  • Creates and oversees strain banks, which serve as archives for diseases that are developing or reemerging and are used in diagnostic and vaccination research.
  • Encourages and supports cutting-edge laboratory techniques to improve patient care and treatment and bolster national and local disease surveillance.
  • Supervises, advises, and directs the creation of peer-reviewed laboratory science research articles. directly prepares manuscripts for scientific journal publication after peer assessment.

Academic prerequisites and pertinent work experience

  • A master’s degree from an accredited university in biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, or a related discipline. In the aforementioned subjects, a PhD will be advantageous.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of pertinent work experience in biochemistry, ideally in the fields of public health and infectious illnesses, with at least six (6) of those years spent at the expert level.
  • Previous experience with laboratory tests and/or biochemistry research.
  • Proven competence and experience in the development, validation, and use of biochemical methods for pathogen and biomarker identification and characterization, such as PCR, ELISA, mass spectrometry, sequencing, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and projects related to biochemistry in a lab environment
  • The readiness to travel both domestically and abroad when necessary
  • Familiarity with molecular biology methods.
  • Previous mass spectrometry experience.
  • Prior experience interpreting and analyzing data.
  • Writing and publishing experience in scientific publications.
  • Prior experience collaborating with global companies.

ASSESSMENT TERMINATION:

  • For a duration of one (1) year, the appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract, with the first three (3) months serving as a probationary period. After then, the agreement may be extended for an equivalent amount of time provided financing is available, performance is good, and agreed-upon deliverables are met.

  • The annual lump sum compensation for the role is US$ 110,951.49 (P4 Step 5) inclusive of all allowances for workers hired overseas and US$ 92,867.97 inclusive of all allowances for people hired locally by the African Union Commission.
