The Finnish KIOS Foundation, two Kenyan civil society organisations, InformAction and CSO Network, and the EU are funding the “Strengthening the Capacity of County-based and Grassroots Civil Society Groups for Enhanced Governance, Accountability and Protection of Human Rights of the People of Kenya – Haki Ni Yetu” project. “Rights, Governance and Accountability Grants” is the name of the sub-grant programme, and the KIOS Foundation is in charge of running it.

Objectives

  • The following are the main goals that will be accomplished with the sub-granting support:
  • To increase the responsibility of duty bearers and to develop the capacity of selected CBOs and grassroots organisations fighting to safeguard the human rights of marginalised groups and individuals in vulnerable situations.
  • In order to improve the delivery of services relevant to Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights and to ensure the rule of law and human rights, it is important to support CBOs and grassroots groups in doing so.

Focus Regions

  • Key themes serve as the direction for this request for grant proposals. Grant applications should distinctly centre on one or more of the following themes:
  • Good governance, fostering the rule of law and governmental accountability, combating corruption, and enhancing access to justice are all aspects of democracy and the rule of law.
  • Women’s rights, the elimination of gender-based violence (GBV), the promotion of inclusion, tolerance, and diversity, as well as sexual health and reproductive rights are all part of gender equality and anti-discrimination.
  • Business and human rights: corporate responsibility, environmental and climate justice.

Financial Details

  • Through two consecutive open requests for grant proposals, the total indicative amount for this granting scheme will be distributed to CBOs and grassroots organisations. Grant requests made in response to this request for proposals must fall within the range of the following minimum and maximum sums:
  • Minimum: 15,000 Euros
  • Maximum: 60,000 euros
  • Grant duration is limited to 12 months.

Outcomes

  • The funded action is projected to have the following transformative and human rights-based outcomes:
  • The capacity of targeted CBOs and grassroots organisations in Kenya to uphold human rights at the local, state, national, regional, and international levels has improved.
  • In order to maintain and advance human rights, rights-holders now have greater ability to assert their rights and take actively in civic and political life in their communities.
  • In the target counties, duty bearers are actively involved and dedicated to furthering human rights.

eligibility requirements

  • A candidate for a grant must meet the following requirements:
  • A non-profit civil society group or association founded in Kenya that is dedicated to promoting human rights and human rights values through non-violence
  • Grants may be given to the following categories of civil society organisations or their affiliates under this call:
  • Community-based organisations (CBOs) are described as not-for-profit, non-governmental, and non-political organisations that have registered with the Department of Social Services currently or intend to do so.
  • It is possible to take into account additional CSOs that operate at the local level and are registered under the Societies Act, Trust Deed Act, and corporations Act as societies, associations, trusts, or corporations limited by guarantee.
  • If other grassroots civil society organisations have developed organisational structures in place and can show they have previously managed this scale of grant/have a fiscal host, they may be taken into consideration. These organisations must work at the grassroots level or in informal settlements.
  • Organisations led by women and young people are especially encouraged to apply. Additionally, marginalised group-led civil society organisations are urged to apply. These civic society organisations must receive at least 50% of the money given to third parties.
  • In order to support CBOs and other smaller non-profit organisations outside of Nairobi, the call’s main focus is on them.
  • Nairobi-based civil society organisations may be taken into consideration if they are located in Nairobi’s informal settlements, or if their mission and intended course of action are focused on assisting HRDs at the county level or in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
  • Grants under this programme are intended for civil society organisations that are capable of managing the proposed activities and funding at this level, have developed organisational structures and appropriate competence in the call’s theme areas.
  • All 47 of Kenya’s counties with civil society organisations that match the aforementioned requirements are eligible for financing. They do, however, invite actors from the countries listed below to apply:
  • Cluster in Western Kenya: Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Migori, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Kisii, Nyamira, and Kericho
