Echidna Global Scholars develop their leadership and evidence-based policy skills over the course of a six-month fellowship, conduct individual research aimed at enhancing learning opportunities and life outcomes for girls, young women, and gender non-conforming people, increase their pathways for impact, and develop their knowledge of gender and global education issues. Scholars join the Echidna Alumni Network after completing the fellowship, a developing community of practise that aims to promote their considerable, ongoing, and combined influence on gender-transformative education both locally and globally.

The Echidna Global Scholars Programme was founded in 2012 and has since hosted eleven cohorts of fellows. It now maintains a network of alumni made up of 33 scholars from 20 different nations.

This programme is made possible thanks to Echidna Giving’s kind donation.

Programmed Stages

The fellowship for Echidna Global Scholars comprises three separate phases:

  • Pre-residency (in home country): With assistance from the Centre for Universal Education (CUE), academics start a time of rigorous in-country data gathering and analysis. This is supplemented by a number of online workshops, group working meetings, and one-on-one advisory sessions. Scholars begin creating their impact plan by identifying and interacting with local stakeholders from their home country. They are also exposed to the leadership principles and techniques that will be the focus of the leadership development programme during the fellowship.
  • Washington, D.C. residency: Scholars concentrate on broadening reach and impact through publication and dissemination of their research through Brookings’ multimedia platforms, strategic impact capacity building, leadership development, and networking. By teaching best practises for analysing, communicating, and leveraging research for policy and key audiences, as well as by expanding scholars’ networks and promoting visibility through Brookings convenings and strategic collaborations, the residency phase is intended to help scholars strengthen their impact. It culminates in a virtual symposium on gender equality in and through education research and policy.
  • Post-residency (in home country): For the two years following post-residency, the CUE team offers specialised assistance to alumni as they carry out impact plans based on their research. Scholars use the knowledge, abilities, and connections developed throughout the fellowship to spark change in their regional contexts through strategic advice, group working sessions, and leadership development support.
