Goals

• The following results have been developed as programming objectives in order to accomplish these long-term impacts:
• Programme goal 1: Graduates are prepared to assume leadership roles in their or for their region of origin
• Programme aim 2: Women and underrepresented groups are encouraged to participate.
• Programme aim 3: Partner institutions’ organisational, financial, and personal capacities are strengthened
• The DAAD offers scholarships for Master’s degree programmes as a part of the “In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme.” The programme, which is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is primarily aimed at university faculty while also meeting the need for academically qualified workers in the public sector.
• Graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a first academic degree who wish to pursue Master’s courses in either their home country (In-Country scholarships are intended for students who study in their home country or in the country for which they have a residence permit) – or – in another Sub-Saharan African country are the target group for scholarships.

PERSONAL FUNDING

• Students who desire to take part in a study course in a country in their home region—in this case, Sub-Saharan Africa—outside of their home country or in a country for which they do not have a resident permit—are eligible for in-region scholarships.
• According to the agreement, DAAD will work with Dedan Kimathi University of Technology by providing up to two (2) In-Country and five (5) In-Region fellowships. grants for master’s degree programmes at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology beginning in 2024.
• The availability of finances will be a requirement for scholarship awards.

REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTER’S DEGREE APPLICATIONS

• Graduates with a first academic degree who are applying for a Master’s degree and who have successfully finished a three-year university degree with above average results (at least: Second Class/Upper Division or equivalent, if applicable) are eligible.
• Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country; t
• They must also meet the following requirements:
  • provide a Second Class/Upper Division or higher result;
  • Clearly demonstrate motivation and strong commitment; have a thorough knowledge of the language of instruction;
  • Have typically completed their last university degree no more than 6 years ago at the time of application;
  • Must be nationals or permanent residents of a Sub-Saharan African country.
  • They should typically be either a) staff members of a public university,
• Female applicants, refugees with established refugee status, and people from other underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to apply.

Please be aware that you are not eligible for additional Master’s grant from the DAAD if you have already obtained one.

AREAS ELIGIBLE FOR A MASTER’S DEGREE

The In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme funds research in fields that are highly pertinent to the advancement of the country.
The following fields are eligible for scholarships at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology:

DUTY AND BEGINNING OF A MASTER’S DEGREE

• Duration
• The scholarships are given for the length of the chosen program’s typical study period, up to a maximum of 24 months.
• In your application, please include the complete time period for which you desire to apply for a scholarship. For instance, if you want to complete a 2-year degree programme, you must explicitly state in your application that you would like the scholarship to last for two years. Your academic achievements will be evaluated in a subsequent financing process after your first year of study. The scholarship will continue as scheduled if this demonstrates that you will successfully complete your study within a reasonable amount of time.
• The scholarship normally starts the following September.
• If you apply for a DAAD scholarship beginning in your second year of studies of a three-year programme, the maximum duration of the scholarship will be two years. Please note that the maximum duration of the scholarship is based on the time that is left until the scholarship holder has reached the regular period of studies in that programme.
• The Affiliate Agreement between the host university and the DAAD serves as the foundation for the typical study length and the commencement date.
• Please be aware that the length of your scholarship will be reduced if you arrive later.

MASTER’S DEGREE APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE

• All applicants must first submit a complete programme application through the DAAD Portal.
• Please be mindful of the deadlines for both the DAAD and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.
• The following steps are included in the DAAD scholarship application process:
• Access the portal here: https://portal.daad.de/sap/bc/bsp/sap/z_set_cookie/setcookie.htm?fund_ar=stv &id=57707393 to register.
• After logging in, select the “Application” tab.
• Fill out the online application form completely, then upload the necessary paperwork (mentioned under number 7 below).

• Application must be submitted through the portal before November 23, 2023.
• Before submitting your application, don’t forget to make sure it is accurate and complies with DAAD regulations. Your application will not be evaluated if it is incomplete.
• Only applications submitted through the DAAD portal will undergo a formal review by DAAD in accordance with its requirements.
• In addition to this initial step, candidates must use the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology’s admissions contact information and procedure to submit an application for admission. The university determines its own admissions deadline. Please familiarise yourself well in advance with the host institution’s application procedure.
• Please be aware that in some Sub-Saharan African nations, a document from the Qualifications Authority is required for university admission (for example, from SAQA in South Africa). It may take some time to apply for these documents, thus it is the applicant’s duty to get the paperwork from the appropriate authorities on time.
• An independent selection committee made up of international university teachers, experts from German and foreign universities, as well as alumni, evaluates applications in a final selection organised by the DAAD that have met both the admission requirements at the host university (and the university’s ranking in the pre-selection) and the DAAD’s formal criteria. The institution’s pre-selection ranking is taken into account as the independent selection committee assesses the applications based on the materials supplied. Evaluation criteria cover extracurricular activities, motivation, academic performance and quality, and the applicability of the research topic.
• The final decision in selection rests with the DAAD.

FORMATS FOR MASTER’S DEGREE APPLICATIONS

• The following documents must be submitted with the DAAD scholarship application (in either English or German):
• DAAD application form, properly completed and submitted by the specified deadline (available on the DAAD portal);
• Curriculum vitae, if possible without requiring a signature, together with a list of publications (if appropriate);
• One recommendation letter (signed and stamped) from a university professor;
• A letter of admission from the host university (if one is not available at the time of application, one may send it later, before the scholarship period begins);

• Certified copies of university degree certificates, transcripts, and, if available, information on the host country’s recognition of the university degree certificates, as well as a grade scale for the final degree;
• Letter of motivation (1-2 pages, including your references to the studies and a potential Master project, as well as your personal and social motivations;
• A copy of the passport, or, in the absence of one, a copy of the national identification card (required for submission of a scholarship application);
• Timetable for a semester;
• A schedule (if relevant, mentioning the anticipated research stay in Germany; see “Additional benefits”);
• Details on your UNHCR registration as a refugee, if appropriate;

• Optional: Additional files that may be pertinent to your application (such as verification of internships or jobs).
• Only if you timely upload the necessary documents to the DAAD portal will your application be considered genuine. Applications that are incomplete will not be accepted. You are in charge of making sure that your applications are thorough. Please note and explain this in the application if you do not have certain documents, such as a letter of admission, at the time of submission.
• Please be aware that the scholarship only kicks in once the university issues the Admission Letter (this can be done later, before the scholarship starts, if it is not available before) and once you provide proof—such as an airline ticket, a letter from your supervisor or coordinator, or an admission test—that you are on campus at the host university and ready to start your studies.
• This must be included in a complete application and submitted as soon as possible to the DAAD portal (if it is not yet available, it may be submitted after the scholarship starts).

Submission of a Master’s Degree Application

• Applications sent to other authorities or through other methods will not be taken into consideration.
• On the final application day, the DAAD portal shuts at 24.00 Central European Time (CET or CEST).

FINANCING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR A MASTER’S DEGREE

• The award includes:
• Benefits Payment Amount and Pace
• tuition costs yearly
• The letter of award will include information on the regularly charged amount.
• Annual study and research allowance: 460 EUR
• a one-time printing allowance near the end of the scholarship
• 400 EUR
• Monthly Scholarship (Housing, Meals, etc.)
• In-Country per month: 240 EUR
• 380 EUR (subject to change) in-region
• Once at the start and once at the end of the scholarship, but only inside the region.
• The award letter will include information about the flat rate travel allowance.
• Insurance only available locally
• The Letter of Award will include details regarding health insurance.

• Please note that not all fees and costs listed on the host institution’s official fee structure may be fully covered by DAAD in some circumstances, for example, if the agreement with the funding organisation forbids DAAD from funding certain items in the fee structure or if expenses listed in the fees are meant to be covered by the individual scholarship benefits. The fees will be paid by DAAD directly to the host institution.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS

• The DAAD will make every effort to transfer your first monthly payment as soon as your arrival or the start of your scholarship is complete.
• It could take some time to process the first transfer of money, especially if you can only open a bank account once you’ve arrived at your destination.
• We advise you to bring some extra cash with you so you can cover any expenses that crop up before receiving your first scholarship payment.
• In general, payments cannot be made before the start date of the scholarship and the start of classes at the host university.
• Additionally, no extra benefits, such as those for family members, that are not included in this call for applications may be requested or awarded.
• Please be aware that the travel allowance for recipients of In-Region scholarships will only be distributed after arrival in the host country, together with the initial scholarship rate.
• The scholarship recipient will get payment directly into their bank account.
• After acceptance into the scholarship scheme, more information will be provided in the Letter of Award.

Additional advantages

• Holders of DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarships are also encouraged to apply for a short-term research stay in Germany of three to six months in the context of research-based Master programmes.
• Please take note that the short-term research stay in Germany should preferable be mentioned in the standard scholarship application and that it can only be granted if the required funding is available.
• If you plan to apply, please be aware that the funding period for a short-term research stay in Germany is a component of the In-Country/In-Region programme, and the short-term research stay in Germany cannot exceed the regular study period of the programme; it must be included in it. After you have been awarded your In-Country/In-Region scholarship, more information will be made available upon request via the DAAD Portal.
• The short-term research grant comes with: A monthly grant payment to cover living expenses
  Personal liability, health, and accident insurance and travel reimbursement.
• DAAD In-Country/In-Region scholarship holders are also invited to apply for several summer schools in Germany (four weeks) and to take part in additional training opportunities, such as trainings in the use of electronic resources or in soft skills.
• After acceptance into the scholarship programme, all extra information on additional perks and the additional application procedures will be made available.
• Please be aware that all applicants who have been shortlisted may be invited to take part in a multi-wave monitoring survey to collect information on various aspects of academic and professional development. It is optional to participate.
