Organizational Design and Reporting

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading international environmental organization that establishes the global environmental agenda, encourages the consistent application of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the framework of the United Nations, and acts as a powerful spokesperson for the environment worldwide. The overarching goal of UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division is to inspire policymakers in government, local government agencies, and business to create and implement strategies, policies, practices, and technologies that support environmentally friendly trade and environmental policies, ensure safe chemical management, encourage sustainable patterns of production and consumption, and maximize the use of natural resources. The Division encourages the creation, application, and dissemination of technology, economic tools, managerial techniques, policies, and other instruments that support making decisions that are environmentally sound and establishing related activities.
  • This job is in the Paris duty station, in the Industry and Economy Division. The following responsibilities will fall under the direct supervision of the Head of the Consumption and Production Unit for the incumbent:

Accountabilities

  • In order to support the One Plastics Initiative’s launch and execution, coordinates with all UNEP Divisions, Regional Offices, and Country Offices to foster internal cooperation and form partnerships with key projects and organizations.
  • Creates, carries out, and assesses the One Plastics Initiative as well as its associated projects and activities; keeps an eye on and evaluates the development and execution of programs and projects; examines pertinent papers and reports; recognizes problems and issues that need to be addressed and starts corrective action; communicates with pertinent parties; makes sure that follow-up actions are taken.
  • Develops a plan for engaging the private sector to boost the One Plastics Initiative’s implementation and increase commitment and impacts.
  • Oversees the preparation of outreach to funders, project concepts, and proposals based on a programmatic approach, and leads the mobilization of resources towards a variety of funding partners. Additionally, they generate relevant documentation and reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.).
  • Oversees the coordination of all UNEP publications pertaining to plastics in order to guarantee information quality, coherence, and integration, as well as scientific evaluation and suggestions. Key messages from publications are then linked to UNEP’s plastics-related communication campaigns and initiatives.
  • Offers significant support for consultative and other plastic pollution-related meetings, conferences, etc.; this includes suggesting themes for the agenda, locating attendees, putting together paperwork and presentations, etc.
  • Launches and plans outreach initiatives, creates a communication plan for the One Plastics Initiative, and encourages partnerships with governmental bodies, businesses, educational institutions, and non-governmental organizations. • Leads training sessions, seminars, and other events; delivers talks on designated subjects and undertakings.
  • Oversees the creation of background material, briefings, and key messages to assist UNEP’s involvement in meetings, conversations, and events pertaining to plastics.
  • Gathers and examines data in order to spot trends or patterns. Then, using data visualization techniques, it presents the findings in the form of graphs, charts, tables, and reports, allowing for data-driven planning, decision-making, and reporting.
  • Completes additional tasks as needed.

Proficiency in conceptual analysis and evaluation is necessary for carrying out autonomous research and analysis. Instruction

  • a graduate-level education in environmental science and engineering, environmental management, sustainable development, or a closely related discipline (Master’s degree or above).
  • Instead of the advanced degree, a first-level university degree combined with appropriate experience may be accepted.
  • It is preferable to successfully complete degree-granting and non-degree-granting programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science.

Experience at Work

  • It is necessary to have at least seven years of increasingly responsibility experience in project or program management, administration, or a similar field.
  • It is necessary to have prior experience working for an international agency such as the UN.
  • It is necessary to have prior experience working with governments in developing nations.
  • It is preferred if one has practical expertise overseeing projects and initiatives linked to waste management, plastics, chemicals, and the circular economy through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the International Climate Initiative.
  • It is preferred to have at least two (2) years of expertise in data analytics or a similar field.

Spoken Words

  • The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. The listed position requires fluency in English. It would be ideal to know another official UN language.
  • NOTE: “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas, while “Fluency” equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, and understand).
