To help them confidently create compelling digital climate change stories, journalists will be exposed to the fundamentals of climate science as well as the complexities of good storytelling and video story production techniques. With a focus on building resilience and equipping journalists to effectively express the pressing issues of climate change and resilience, this intense week-long course aims to do just that.

This programme will teach journalists how to demystify the technical jargon of climate science and make it understandable and relatable to the general public. Additionally, this programme aims to humanise the work done by the GRAPE project, which stands for Green Resilient Agricultural Productive Ecosystems. Journalists will be crucial in increasing community understanding, awareness, and readiness by humanising climate change and highlighting its effects and solutions.

Participants are required to create a top-notch digital story about climate adaptation and climate-resilient agriculture at the conclusion of the course, which can be published by local, regional, and international media outlets.

Objectives

  • As a result of the training, South Asian journalists will be better equipped to report all facets of climate-resilient agriculture, including regional initiatives, difficulties, and solutions in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region.
  • The workshop will offer techniques for clearly and compellingly conveying the local impacts of climate change, particularly those relating to agriculture and climate resilience. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to create and deliver tales that are clear, accessible, and intelligible to the general audience.

Structure

  • Four tracks that are essential to digital storytelling will be the focus of the course:
  • Journalism and storytelling about climate change
  • Overview of climate change in the HKH and an introduction to the fundamentals of climate science.
  • A thorough examination of GRAPE initiatives, the issues they tackle, and the idea of climate resilient agriculture.
  • Recognising the limitations of climate adaptation and resilience as well as bogus solutions and greenwashing from practical, scaleable climate solutions.
  • a discussion of successful climate communication tactics that can be used in various storytelling products.
  • Track for creating and editing videos
  • Develop your technical abilities in both pre- and post-production for videos, including initial research, screenwriting and storyboarding, technical and shooting advice, equipment inspection, audio recording methods, and interview arrangements.
  • Develop your film direction and storytelling skills by learning various shooting techniques, how to film pertinent b-roll, narrative tactics, how to make creative decisions for particular types of results, and how to include scientists and experts into your stories.
  • Expert panel discussion about how to capture high-quality cinematic video with little equipment and little time.
  • Tracks for editorial and pitching
  • Think of the immediate and indirect effects of climate change on agricultural communities, agriculture, and other sectors.
  • introduction to second order and third order influences in addition to the first order impacts that are immediately apparent to locate a variety of intriguing and pertinent tale ideas.
  • Science journalism fundamentals on how to create working connections with experts, identify papers and reports, and how to keep track of recent developments are covered, as well as how to scope out the appropriate and diverse expert sources to use in the stories for further learning and climate reporting outside of the workshop.
  • International publishing opportunities for video reports, short documentaries, and climate-related stories, as well as an introduction to the fundamentals of freelance journalism.
