Three tracks are available through the African Epidemic Service: epidemiology, laboratory leadership, and public health informatics. A two-year competency-based applied epidemiology training programme, the African Epidemic Service – Epidemiology track seeks to improve member states of the African Union’s capacity for disease prevention and response.

Fellowship Information

  • The fellowship includes a two-year course of study in applied epidemiology, including three months of classroom instruction in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, and 21 months of practical training at a location run by an African Union member state. While activities at the host site will be conducted in the member state’s language, the didactic training will be given in all African Union languages.
  • Successful candidates will engage in experiential core learning activities, such as data analysis, evaluation of surveillance systems, and epidemic investigation. A knowledgeable mentor will assist the AES-Epidemiology fellow. The fellowship initiative will also pair fellows with seasoned public health mentors who will offer guidance.

Funding

  • Africa CDC will pay for all fellowship expenses, including travel-related expenses (such as airfare, housing, and incidentals), stipends, hardware, and insurance. They will also supply all educational and development materials.
  • Fellows will receive assistance in obtaining the necessary software and Internet access for online learning.
