BACKGROUND

Sustainable livestock transformation requires active youth participation. Without young people’s active participation, international efforts will not be successful. Youth should be prioritized and placed at the heart of these talks in order to produce new results. They should be considered as partners and fundamental contributors rather than as receivers or targets alone in the search for new and creative ways to make livestock systems more effective, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in partnership with UNIMED – Mediterranean Universities Union, is hosting the Global Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Livestock Transformation (hereinafter referred to as “Youth Dialogue”), building on the existing youth spaces and platforms.

The Youth Dialogue will bring together and enable young people from all around the world to discuss important issues and problems, as well as to find creative and doable solutions for sustainable livestock transition.

The Youth Dialogue was jointly developed by and for young people. It will be held in person at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, on September 25–27, 2023, concurrent with the FAO Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation (GC-SLT). It will bring together up to 200 young people from around the world with a background in livestock, including farmers or producers, scientists, and students pursuing their Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD at relevant universities (e.g., animal science, veterinary medicine, or agriculture). Participants will debate two livestock-related issues connected to the GC-SLT’s four major themes and create a youth statement that will be shared with the GC-SLT attendees. They will also take part in a few GC-SLT plenary sessions.

Participants will receive a virtual training on the livestock subjects that will be covered at the event as well as a virtual training on the event’s format and processes prior to the Youth Dialogue (early September). In order to properly prepare and engage, participants will also receive the background materials and information they need.
During the youth dialogue,

Give young people a place to share and discuss their thoughts on sustainable livestock transition;
give young people a chance to interact with FAO Members, producer organizations, academic and research institutions, development organizations, civil society organizations, and the corporate sector;

Include youth in the application and selection process.
Please submit the application before July 31, 2023, if you want to take part in the youth dialogue.

The following minimal criteria and desired abilities and experience will be taken into consideration when evaluating applications, along with their relevance and clarity. We’ll think about gender and geographic balance.

For a select group of participants from low-income countries, a limited number of travel grants (flight tickets, visa charges, lodging, daily allowance) are offered. All other participants are responsible for their own expenses.

The deadline for submissions is July 31.
