A burgeoning multidisciplinary discipline is sports and exercise medicine (SEM). In marginalized communities*, however, where there may be a shortage of resources like qualified SEM staff, necessary financing, and institutional support to undertake effective clinical programs or carry out research, SEM as a field is still emerging.

In addition, funding SEM research may not be a top priority amid other more pressing issues faced by communities with little resources. People of color, members of Indigenous communities, women, young people, people with disabilities, people who have been forcibly displaced, and members of LGBTQIA+ communities may become even more marginalized in these contexts and face the brunt of limited resources.

Therefore, it is crucial to provide financial opportunities for SEM researchers from marginalized groups to conduct research relevant to SEM in marginalized communities in order to drive global equity in SEM and foster varied and inclusive research and data. Low- and middle-income nations (LMICs), Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC), women, youth, persons with disabilities, LGBTQIA+, residents of war zones, and migrant, refugee, and internally displaced populations are just a few examples of marginalized communities.

The reason for the grants

  • These funds are intended to support and advance SEM-focused research on the health and wellbeing of marginalized communities conducted by academics from marginalized groups.
  • Through the BJSM Global Mentoring Program, beneficiaries of the prize will also have the chance to learn from and be mentored by other international SEM researchers.

Amount and variety of prizes

  • Six (6) grants, each totaling £2,000, are possible.
  • The recipient may utilize the grant money to cover living costs while carrying out the research project, travel to the study site, or other research-related expenses.
  • In 2023, applicants who are chosen will get their payments.

Term

The grant has a one-year term, thus it must be used within that time frame when funds is received. Recipients of a 2023 grant may reapply if BMJ provides funds in 2024, but in order to be competitive, they must show progress in their study since receiving their earlier award and detail how additional financing would expand on already finished work.

Eligibility requirements

This honor is offered to scholars from underrepresented groups who are engaged in SEM-related research in underrepresented populations. The candidate must to be the lead or joint principal investigator on the project.

Selection standards

i. The project’s novelty for SEM and equity-deserving populations.
ii. The suitability of the research project’s scientific rigor and study design.
iii. The study project’s value and therapeutic applicability to underserved communities.
iv. The feasibility of the research project as outlined.
v. The application’s quality.
