The African Fact-Checking Awards are in their eleventh year and are the longest-running awards program honoring fact-checking journalism by the media in Africa. Today, journalists, journalism students, and expert fact-checkers from across the continent can submit entries for the 2023 awards.

Requirements

Entries must have been initially published or broadcast between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023 in order to be eligible. The fact-check should come to the conclusion that a statement regarding an important subject that originated in or is related to Africa is either false or misleading.

There are three categories for the awards, and the winners and runners-up receive recognition. These are the categories:

  • Year’s Best Fact-Check by a Working Journalist
  • Fact-Check by a Professional Fact-Checker of the Year
  • Year’s Best Student Journalist Fact-Check

Eligibility

For this competition, entrants must meet the following requirements:

  • -Be the original creation of the person or group listed as the author on the entry form.
  • -Reveal as false or misleading a claim on a significant African-originated or African-relevant topic.
  • -Be a unique work of fact-checking journalism that was first published or broadcast between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.
  • -Be received by the organizers on or before June 30, 2023, at midnight GMT. Incomplete entries won’t be accepted.
  • -Use the official entry form to register with the organizers. No other methods of entry submission are permitted.

The application form must be filled out in either English or French, although fact-checks may be published or aired in any language. However, a written translation must be included with the entry if the fact-checking report is not in either English or French.

  • -By submitting an entry, the contestant attests that they are the original writers of the work, and that if there is ever any question about this, they will be solely responsible.
  • -Africa Check reports are not eligible for the competition.
The judges maintain the discretion to transfer a submission from one category to another.
  • -Candidates may submit more than one report if they so want, but they may only enter the prizes in one category every year.
  • -Should the participant receive a reward in the competition, we will transfer the money to a bank account that they will designate.
  • A jury representative may inquire about specifics throughout the shortlisting phase.
  • Participants who are discovered to have violated any ethical standards in relation to their entry will be disqualified.
  • -Applicants must consent to participate in media appearances and/or reports regarding the awards if they win.
  • -Award applicants must consent to accept the judges’ judgment as final.

Prize:

  • Each of the winners in the categories of professional fact-checker and working journalist will get US$3,000 in prize money.
  • The place finishers will each get $1,500.
  • The student journalist category winner will receive $2,000, and the runner-up will receive $1,000.
