The AfWA Scholarships 2023 for Young African Water & Sanitation Professionals are now accepting applications. The African Water Association (AfWA) provides research scholarships to young African water and sanitation professionals as part of its capacity-building program for African stakeholders in the water, sanitation, and hygiene sector (AfriCap), which is supported by USAID.

Master students and engineers in their final year of training are the intended beneficiaries. Each scholarship, with a maximum value of $1,000 USD, will allow recipients to conduct research on a subject related to the WASH sector that has been approved by a scientific report.

Themes for Research

The following topics are for 2022–2023 academic year’s scholarship program:

  • Methods for lowering Non-Revenue Utility water sources
  • Better Control of Water Quality
  • Water services in urban areas with low incomes
  • ICT use (digitalization) to improve water and sanitation services in urban and peri-urban areas
  • Resource management for water
  • Sanitation, gender, and water

Funding for Young African Water & Sanitation Professionals Scholarships 2023

  • The maximum amount each recipient may receive as part of this scholarship is US $1,000.
  • Upon completion, approval by the research supervisor, and receipt by the AfWA Research and Capacity Building Program Coordinator. They will pay Sixty percent (60%) of this sum to the recipient.
  • Once the recipient turns in the electronic version of their final research report, they will pay the remaining 40%.

Eligibility

  • possess citizenship in one of the eligible sub-Saharan African nations.
  • being in good academic standing with their institution.

Application

Send in an application file that contains:

  • Student ID or current-year registration receipt
  • most recent degree earned
  • Personal statement (3 pages max)
  • three letters of recommendation (one should be from the academic supervisor)
  • Form for research proposals
  • You must submit Application materials electronically at the same time to udjalia@afwa-hq.org and gdjagoun@afwa-hq.org.
