The Middle East Program is pleased to announce the 2023 competition for the Wilson Center’s Visiting Arab Journalist Program 2023. One journalist from the Middle East, North Africa, or the Arab world will be chosen to work for three months as a resident at the Woodrow Wilson Center in the center of Washington, D.C., where they will do in-depth, policy-related research and write. Dr. David Ottaway, Middle East Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, generously donated funds to support this event.
The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is the official memorial to the nation’s 28th president. The Center is “a living memorial,” a meeting place for some of the best and brightest researchers and professionals from all over the world. Further, their work serves as the focal point of our efforts and contributes unbiased and pertinent research and information to the national debates on public policy.
From March 1 through May 31, 2023, journalists will be in residence at the Woodrow Wilson Center for three months. Required to work a full schedule of independently conducted research and writing based on the subject specified in the research proposal submitted at the time of application while at the Wilson Center.
Additionally, they strongly encourage them to occasionally attend conferences hosted by the Center’s Middle East Program and to engage in other forms of intellectual activity at the Wilson Center and within the greater Washington-area community of Middle East watchers.
Benefit
- The allowance is $5,000 per month.
- The Wilson Center will also cover around three-quarters of the visiting journalist’s health insurance premiums, with the journalist contributing the remaining one-quarter.
- Journalist given a comfortable workspace, a computer running Windows, and, if possible, a part-time research assistance.
- Access to digital resources, the Wilson Center Library’s book and journal holdings, the Library of Congress, more so local university and special libraries, and other research facilities are all made available.
Eligibility
- Open to Arab men and women from, and working in, the Middle East or North Africa in the Arabic media.
- Applications accepted from members of the print, television, radio or electronic media.
- Candidates must be currently working as reporters and columnists or broadcasters.
- Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience and must be able to work in both written and spoken English as well as Arabic.
- Applicants must be able to hold a valid passport and obtain a J1 visa. The Center will assist in the visa process.
