Applications open for the EPFL Excellence in Africa Junior Faculty Development Programme 2022. The Junior Faculty Development programme designed to bring together talented and highly-educated early-stage professors in Africa with professors at EPFL striving for common goals: scientific excellence, the promotion of knowledge, and the wish to have a positive societal impact in Africa. The Junior Faculty Development programme will thus lay the ground for successful careers in Africa and potentially lasting collaborations with EPFL.

The EPFL Excellence in Africa Junior Faculty Development Programme 2022 is the first programme launched within the framework of the “Excellence in Africa” initiative. It is pairing up early-stage professors in Africa with EPFL professors, providing funding for jointly-designed research projects over a period of 4 to 5 years. In the course of their project, the Africa-based professors will complete a secondment of up to one year in the laboratory of their colleague at EPFL

The research projects will develop and deploy innovative solutions to respond to key priorities in areas such as clean and sustainable energy, global warming, resource efficiency, as well as health and neuroscience. The grants will also support breakthrough science that uses the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning and information technology for several applications, such as smart farming and robotics to address critical gaps. Funding

Eligible costs include and limited to:

Personnel costs
  • Personnel costs at the host institution of the applicant, but not the salary of the Junior Faculty grantee, who must be employed and paid by his/her African host institution.
  • Personnel costs for a maximum of CHF 210’000 for the full duration of the project for personnel employed on the research project in the laboratory of the EPFL professor.
Travel costs
  • Travel, including participation in conferences and workshops and travel linked to the collaboration.
Equipment and research funds
  • Scientific equipment(s) and other infrastructure of durable value.
  • Research funds, including consumables, direct costs of infrastructure use, computing time and data access, publication costs, and justified expenses of third parties (subcontracting)
Living allowance for secondment at EPFL
  • A living allowance approved in presence of a written official confirmation from the host institution in Africa that a living allowance for secondment at EPFL not covered by the host institution
Institutional contribution
  • No overheads allowed for this programme; instead, an amount of maximum CHF 20’000 per year dedicated to a defined project aimed at the betterment of the Junior Faculty grantee’s host institution.
Eligibility
  • Citizens of any nationality can apply to the Junior Faculty Development programme; they may reside in any country in the world at the time of the application more so employed during the project by a higher education or research institution in Africa.
  • Applicants must hold a doctorate (PhD) from a recognized higher education institution, and the PhD awarded between 1 st January 2011 and 16th November 2022 (inclusive).
  • Applicants must have an outstanding and proven track record of activity and publication in their research field and be qualified to independently conduct the proposed research project and supervise doctoral theses.
  • Applicants must already be employed or due to be hired by a higher education or research institution (host institution) in an African country before the start of the project.
  • The African host institution must provide appropriate conditions for granted applicants to independently conduct research and manage funding.
  • During the project, granted applicants must remain employed by the African host institution at a 100% rate for the full duration of the programme (4 to 5 years).
  • Successful applicants must spend at least 60% of their working time on research.
