600 million people, or around 57% of the population in sub-Saharan Africa, lack access to consistent and dependable power. The off-grid energy funds offered by USADF support market-driven solutions that link individuals to electricity.

We gave over US$11 million in grant support to over 100 African businesses during the previous five years (2017–2021) to help them offer renewable energy solutions to areas with little or no access to national power systems.

Off-Grid Energy Issues Facing the USADF

In order to support African entrepreneurs providing energy solutions using solar, wind, hydro, and biogas technologies, the U.S. government’s Power Africa initiative partners with the private sector to launch a number of off-grid energy challenges, such as the USADF Women in Energy Challenge and the USADF Sahel-Horn of Africa Energy Challenge.

Through these Challenges, we give African businesses that support regional economic activity and exhibit a scalable, sustainable business plan prizes of up to US$250K. The winners of the challenge have short-term solutions to meet the demands of commercial and productive endeavours, such as off-farm businesses, commercial enterprises, and agricultural production and processing.
