The third annual “Stella Soulioti” Human Rights Award has begun, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that nominations and ideas for 2023 are already being accepted.

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, which is observed on December 10 every year, the Award—which was established by a decision made by the Council of Ministers based on a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—will be given in December 2023 (the precise date will be revealed later). It will be given to people, groups, or organisations that have shown exceptional work and activity in a field or fields directly related to the promotion and protection of human rights d

Benefits

  • A 10,000 euro prize is given along with the award, and its purpose is to help the winning individual, group, or organisation with its efforts to defend and advance human rights in Cyprus.

Criteria

  • Individuals or groups of individuals who are lawfully residing in Cyprus, as well as non-governmental organisations that are registered and functioning in the Republic of Cyprus, may submit nominations or suggestions.
  • Nominations and participation from governmental authorities are prohibited. High-ranking public officials and/or in-office government employees are not eligible to nominate people, organisations, or groups for the Award.
  • A five-member Evaluation Committee, consisting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Chairman), the Minister of Justice and Public Order, the Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights (Ombudsman), and two well-known individuals in the field of human rights promotion and protection, will evaluate the nominations or proposals and choose the winner based on the pertinent Decision of the Council of Ministers.
