The Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (KCIC) is seeking proposals from knowledgeable and experienced mentors in the agricultural industry to offer mentoring services to people and organisations engaged in various value chains in the agricultural sector.

The mentorship programme strives to assist, empower, and encourage agripreneurs, enabling long-term success and growth in their businesses.
With this partnership, KCIC hopes to help customers of the Cohort 4 of the KCIC AgriBiz programme and future cohorts implement the mentorship and coaching programme. The programme will provide assistance to 510 clients with the main objective of providing the target clients with technical agri-business skills that would aid in their development.
This mentorship and coaching initiative is anticipated to have the following effects on the targeted firms:
- Increased output
- Improved procedures and systems for efficiency
- GAPs, or good agricultural practises
- Increasing their earnings by creating jobs
- The value chain-specific mentoring and coaching will be essential in accelerating the growth of the firms receiving help and will serve to supplement the business support already being provided to clients by KCIC professionals.
Goals and Purpose of the Programme
- This RFP’s goal is to find and choose suitable mentors with expertise and experience in the poultry, livestock, and animal husbandry value chains.

- Agripreneurs will be able to learn and use real, tried-and-true techniques and methodologies that will aid in the transformation of their businesses through the mentorship programme, which will be highly interactive. In order to implement all components of the mentorship programme, mentors with technical competence in various value chains will work closely with KCIC staff and AgriBiz clients.
- The goal of the mentoring programme is to provide the target clients with technical agri-business skills that will aid in their development.
Expected Products and Results
The following outputs must be produced to KCIC’s satisfaction by the program’s conclusion:
- Each client will receive a baseline report outlining the gaps that have been validated and the kind of mentorship support that will be offered to fill those gaps.
- A report outlining the approach, the overall schedule, and the milestones for the six-month programme.
- A minutes book for each mentoring session.
- A midterm report outlining the development of each mentee.
- Submission and acceptance of the mentees’ end-of-project survey data.
- Each client receives a final report outlining the sort of mentoring received, outcomes obtained, difficulties encountered, and specific recommendations and an action plan.
Timelines and Duration
- The fourth cohort of Agribiz is anticipated to begin operations in November 2023 and last for six months.
Competencies and Experience
- Proposals from competent people who exhibit and meet the following eligibility requirements will be taken into consideration for the business mentoring and coaching programme;
General Requirements
- A minimum of five years’ expertise in the specialised agricultural value chains that provide technical support to CBO, SMEs, and start-ups.
- If possible, the qualified candidate should have prior experience working with agri-prenerus throughout the various value chains and should be able to demonstrate understanding of working with SMEs, Earlystage firms, and CBOs in the agribusiness sector.
- Ability to prioritise work and effectively manage time in order to assist mentees in balancing conflicting demands and achieving their objectives.
- Working in a SME environment or having prior experience with formal business coaching or mentoring will both be advantages.
- High level of English and Kiswahili oral and writing communication abilities.
- A bonus would be earning a Master’s degree in business-related coursework from an authorised institution.
- Mentors from the host Hubs (counties) where the AgriBiz clients are located will be given preference.
Specific Qualification for the Value Chain
- Animal husbandry and livestock (beef cattle, dairy goats, sheep, camel, and pigs)
- A minimum of five years’ worth of relevant experience in the particular cattle industry.
- Comprehensive understanding of animal nutrition, breeding, and management techniques.
Poultry
- 5 years or more of practical experience raising poultry.
- knowledge of biosecurity procedures and disease control for poultry.
Horticulture/Agronomy
- 5 years or more of horticulture or agronomy expertise is required.
- Strong experience in soil management, pest control, and agricultural production.
Apiculture
- 5 minimum years of beekeeping and honey producing experience.
- knowledge of disease and pest management, as well as bee management.
Aquaculture
- 5 years or more of progressively responsible experience in aquaculture operations.
- mastery of fish farming methods, including water quality control.
processing agriculture and adding value
- Agroprocessing and value addition experience of at least 5 years.
- knowledge of packing, post-harvest management, and food processing.
