Supporting the development of EPM models and leading planning analyses

  • Support the development of EPM (Electricity Planning Model, internally developed) in order to maintain consistency with the other models in the model suite and to make sure that EPM is modified to meet the evolving difficulties and inquiries it seeks to address. The goal is to have a model that is current in terms of the represented technology, the coding conventions, and the methodology utilized for the many studies the team must conduct. It is crucial that EPM’s (Electricity Planning represent) ability to represent systems with high amounts of variable renewable energy (VRE) is strong, and that it is up to date on decarbonization technologies (Green hydrogen, CCS, etc.).
  • Lead the development of the model suite required to evaluate concerns with the architecture of the wholesale electricity market and provide evaluations on the suitability of current market design decisions to decarbonize the power industry.
  • In order to complete this objective, the ETC will continue its work on developing a methodology to evaluate market design possibilities. The methodology will then be tested on a small number of case studies that are pertinent to operations teams (the initial pilots may be Georgia and India). Encourage the development of knowledge products.

3/ Provide market-related and/or decarbonization analysis to support operations

  • To support operations, lead a few market-related assessments (such as market design choices, market opening analyses, and/or decarbonization analyses). Support talks with teams and clients on the scope, data, and scenarios in particular; take the lead on the modeling effort and the dissemination of the results.

4/ Country teams guidance and product knowledge

  • The planning group must also carry out a number of reviews, provide training support, maintain a data repository, and advise national teams on modeling, planning, and market design-related concerns. It is anticipated that the Consultant would assist the larger team in carrying out these duties as and when they become necessary.

Selection Standards

  • A master’s or doctoral degree in a related field, such as power systems engineering, operations research, or economics, preferably with a focus on power economics
  • Solid analytical abilities with a focus on data analysis, operations research, and optimization
  • Three years or more of relevant experience, ideally in one of the following fields:

Planned power systems

  • Working knowledge of energy system decarbonization would be advantageous.
  • Proven ability to write in English and have the capacity to create articles and reports that are ready for publication.
  • The capacity to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • The capacity to operate autonomously, to exercise initiative, and to be adaptable enough to swiftly change work program requirements.
  • Strong oral communication abilities, particularly the capacity to explain complicated concepts simply and to interact with clients in an evidence-based manner.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to establish trusting relationships with coworkers and stakeholders outside of departments and units

Future ET appointments are not available to former or current ET employees who have completed all or a portion of their third-year ET appointment.
