A SHORT SUMMARY OF THE POSITION’S FUNCTIONS

The position holder will report directly to the Program Specialist in charge of the projects funded by the Flanders Trust Fund for UNESCO, specifically Enhancing Climate Services for Improved Water Resources Management in Vulnerable Regions to Climate Change: Case studies from Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean (CliMWaR) and Hydro-Resilience: Citizen and Open Science. The incumbent will also work under the general supervision of the Director of the Water Sciences Division (HYD).

The Individual Consultant will carry out the following duties in this situation:

Extended Description

I The following are specific examples from the “Enhancing Climate Services for Improved Water Resources Management in Vulnerable Regions to Climate Change: Case studies from Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean (CliMWaR)” project:

a. Oversee the creation of the UNESCO Open Learning platform’s online course on “Drought and Flood Risk Management for Decision Makers.” Coordination with partners, management of the setup of the course materials, creation of communication materials, design of the course’s kick-off session, and creation of the course implementation report are all included in this.

b. Oversee the creation of the UNESCO Open Learning platform’s online course “African Drought Atlas.” collaboration with partners, platform setup management, communication material development, design of the course’s kick-off session, and creation of the course implementation report are all included in this.

b. Arrange for the English translation and update of the “Latin American Drought Atlas.” To ensure the final product is print-ready, this includes communicating with the original authors, collaborators, and publishing designer;

d. Create the project’s final narrative report based on the outputs produced by the various project components between July and December 2023 for the FUST Steering Committee meeting with the donor;

In the “Hydro-Resilience: Citizen and Open Science for Climate Adaptation” project:

a. Arrange for the ICTP-developed online course “Climate Services” to be modified to focus on Water Resources Management, and arrange for the development materials to be transferred to the UNESCO Open Learning Platform. Included in this are the creation of the course’s kick-off session’s design, communication materials, and the course implementation report;

a. Arrange for the CRIDA (Climate Risk Informed Decision Analysis) manual, produced by UNESCO, to be translated into Portuguese from English. Managing the translation process and coordinating with the publication designer to make sure the final product is print-ready are included in this.

c. Support the documentation of the open hardware pilot applications in at least three pilot nations within the framework of the online course “Cookbook for Open Hardware Sensors for Water Resources Management” on the UNESCO Open Learning platform. This entails working with regional partners in the targeted nations and compiling findings into a progress report;

d. Find collaborators and plan the creation of the online course “Artificial Intelligence for Water Management.” This involves collaborating with the project partners to provide the necessary materials, setting up the course on the UNESCO Open Learning platform, creating the communication materials, and designing and launching the course’s kick-off session;

e. Based on the outputs generated by the various project components and previously filed progress reports, prepare a narrative report and 6-month progress report for the HydroResilience project for the FUST Steering Committee meeting with the funder;

f. Oversee the creation of the UNESCO Open Learning platform’s online course on “Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems for Disaster Risk Reduction and Water Management.” This includes locating those with the necessary knowledge, setting up the platform for the course materials, creating the communication materials and exchanging with course participants, and designing and launching the course’s kick-off session.

g. Establish and oversee the UNESCO Open Learning platform’s online course on “Citizen Science Toolbox for Water Management.” This includes creating the communication materials and exchanging with course participants, setting up the course materials on the platform, and designing and launching the course’s kick-off session.

h. Coordinate the machine learning and artificial intelligence mapping exercise for water management. This include creating the terms of reference, locating possible partners, setting up a survey for the UNESCO Water Family, and compiling the survey’s findings;

i. Coordinate the planning of an Open Science or Artificial Intelligence Symposium. This entails selecting possible speakers, organizing the schedule, and setting up a hackathon geared toward young people;

III In the Water Science Division’s Regular Program:

a. Work in concert with international partners to find areas of overlap and develop a proposal for cooperation and a shared work schedule that focuses on citizen and open research for water management;

b. Create a reporting tool for the IHP-IX implementation. This entails carrying out a pilot phase and creating a database, reporting form, and report structure for the actions carried out in relation to each of the 10 IHP-IX outputs of Priority Area I;

c. Organize the reporting phase on the Priority Area I’s implemented actions under IHP-IX for the biennium 2022-2023, gather replies, and see to it that the Priority Area I’s individual reports are produced;

EDUCATION

  • advanced academic degree, master’s degree or equivalent, in environmental sciences, water management, or a related field

EXPERIENCE AT WORK AND SKILLS

  • More than two years of international water management-related professional experience.

LANGUAGES

  • extremely good command of English

DESIRABLE COMPETENCES

  • Open EdX (online learning) and/or website building (HTML/Drupal) experience will be viewed favorably;
  • Spanish and/or French language proficiency will be seen as assets;
  • An asset will be considered prior employment with international organizations (UN);
