Texas A&M University’s Programme on Conflict and Development (ConDev) is now taking submissions for its yearly Student Media Grant Programme, giving Aggies and others the chance to shed light on the human stories underlying important global concerns. ConDev is working along with the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism this year (2023-2024) to concentrate on the part that hospitality and tourism play in the global mediation of conflict.

Since 2013, programme participants have documented global events showing the confluence of conflict and development using images, interviews, and other methods. This year, we focus on how hospitality and tourism have aided in promoting peace. The Howard G. Buffett Foundation Endowed Chair on Conflict and Development at Texas A&M provides funding for these grants.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at any recognised university worldwide are eligible for the programme. Students who will graduate in 2023 may also apply.
  • Those chosen for the programme will get up to $5,000 to travel anywhere they like, domestically or abroad, provided they have the necessary consent from their university and any other pertinent organisations.

Programme Specifics

  • Each award recipient is required to dedicate a minimum of two months in 2024 to researching, photographing, and writing on a topic that highlights the difficulties fragile and conflict-affected nations experience via the perspective of tourism and/or hospitality.
  • Students will be required to complete the following during their experience in hospitality and tourism: Show evidence of a minimum two-month commitment to your selected problem focus through extracurricular activities, community service, internships, student research, or other endeavours;
  • Develop photojournalism deliverables for ConDev’s website and/or social media, and capture their chosen subjects on film, audio, or other media to highlight the contribution of hospitality and tourism to issues of conflict and development;
  • Their work in a form of refereed media for publication or display.

  • Oct. 1, 2023: Start of application acceptance
  • By November 30th, 2023 (11:59 p.m. CST, American time), Application Closing Date
  • Dec. 20, 2023: Review Period: We appreciate your patience as we consider all of your fantastic proposals.
  • Period of Notification: January 7–23, 2024
  • Depending on the proposal schedule, February through May 2024: Spending of Funds
