2023 Essay Prompts

Essays must centre on one of the themes from this year.

  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a vow that each student who enrols at ICU makes to support and uphold it. The right to labour is the central theme of Article 23 of the Declaration. Which of the four points in Article 23 has the greatest significance for you, based on your own experience?
  • Given that everyone now lives in an era of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of things (IoT), ICU’s academic programme places a strong emphasis on the need to understand both humanities and technology. Everyone has observed important technical developments over the past ten years that have radically changed people’s way of life (such as cell phones).
  • Technology might potentially disempower people or act against their best interests, but it can also have negative repercussions. Have you ever had a similar experience?

Prize Specifics

  • Top Prize (1 winner): The winner and a guarantor will each get two round-trip plane tickets to Tokyo in the summer of 2024. The journey will include a stop in the ICU. The top prize winner has the choice of accepting 100,000 yen in place of the flight tickets.
  • Second Prize: A 50,000 yen gift card (one winner).
  • A book illustrating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in French, English, and Japanese was awarded third place (10 winners).
  • Special Prize (1 winner): Same as third prize for individuals who have not received an English-language education in more than a year.
