Applications for the Getty Library Research Grants are now being accepted to support a variety of research initiatives.

They offer researchers who need to use particular collections stored at the Getty Research Institute (GRI) short-term, partial support.

Dedicated Grants

Along with the general call for applications, the following targeted funds are offered:

  • Grant from the Whitney and Lee Kaplan African American Visual Culture Library: Aids study that makes use of a just-acquired, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary collection of more than 3,000 published works on African American art.
  • Grants are given to projects that draw on the Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky Gastronomy Collection of Rare and Contemporary Books to study the visual culture, food preparation, and presentation, as well as culinary history.
  • study that makes use of the Getty Conservation Institute’s (GCI) collection, which includes specialised study materials relating to the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage, is supported by the Conservation Collection Library Grant.
  • Undergraduate Awards: The Getty Library and special collections are available specifically for advanced students specialising in art history, architectural history, or studio art.

Terms

  • The purpose of library research grants is to help with travel, accommodation, and living costs. There is no housing offered. Grants are typically given out in the following ways based on the distance travelled:
  • Within the state of California (must be farther than 80 miles from the Getty Centre): $1,500
  • North America, encompassing Mexico and Canada: $3,000
  • $4,500 for international shipping outside of North America.
  • The length of the study project may be between five days and a maximum of eight weeks.

eligibility requirements

  • Unless otherwise stated in the award description, Library Research Grants are designed for researchers of all nationalities and levels who can establish a compelling need to use materials kept in the Getty Library and who live more than 80 miles away from the Getty Centre. Projects must be related to particular library collection objects.
