Scope

Since 1982, IDRC has supported graduate students conducting international development-related thesis research. The John G. Bene Researchers Fellowship ($25 000CAD) , a gift from his estate, is given each year to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are enrolled in master’s or doctoral programmes at Canadian universities. Candidates should have a background in the social sciences and forestry (e.g., agroforestry, gender, biodiversity, ecosystems, climate justice for women and Indigenous peoples).

John G. Bene Researchers Fellowship ($25 000CAD) provide this to support fieldwork on the connection between forest resources and human wellbeing on the social, economic, cultural, and environmental fronts in emerging nations, particularly in light of a changing climatic environment. The chosen candidate will put up research proposals that assist underprivileged populations in developing nations, with a focus on women and Indigenous people, with the goal of boosting the forested communities’ resilience in the face of challenging circumstances. Please take note that projects with a genomics or genetic modification focus are not eligible.

Eligibility

  • All Canadian citizens and residents who are enrolled in master’s or doctorate programmes at a Canadian university are eligible to apply. The prize offered in response to this appeal will pay for fieldwork expenses incurred while working on a master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation in one or more Global South nations.

Additional eligibility requirements 

  • If you are selected for an award, you will have up to 12 months from the start date mentioned in your Award Agreement to spend the funds received.  
  • When your research involves more than one region, you must plan to spend a minimum of five consecutive weeks in the field in each region. 
  • This award will cover research costs for a maximum of 12 months in the field. If your field research exceeds 12 months, you must cover additional costs from another source of funding.
