With an estimated 115 million people, Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa and is located in the Horn of Africa. With a surface area of 1,104,300 square kilometers, it shares borders with six African nations: Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. Over 15 million children are served by UNICEF in Ethiopia through its programs in child protection, WASH, health, nutrition, social policy, and education. How can you influence things?
- The principal responsibility, related obligations, and tasks
- Planning and Management of Security Risks
- Gather, document, and report to the supervisor all information pertaining to the premises, resources, employees, and eligible family members of UNICEF in compliance with UN and UNICEF Security Management Systems.
- Assist in the execution of all technical requirements outlined in the UN Area Security Plan, Security Risk Management (SRM) Measures, Residential Security Measures (RSM), and other pertinent rules, guidelines, and assessments, in close conjunction with the supervisor.
- Help the supervisor create UNICEF security paperwork, such as fire and evacuation plans and security contingency plans, and help compile required reports in compliance with UNICEF security reporting criteria.
- Help the supervisor draft standard security reports and returns, such as Security Incident Reports (SIRs).
Services for safety and security
- Assist the supervisor in keeping an eye on the security situation and any new threats to the safety of UNICEF employees, eligible family members, and the organization’s facilities, assets, and resources. Participate in security risk management for all places where UNICEF employees and eligible family members are present, as directed by the supervisor, and help in security activities that support UNICEF operations.
- To help the supervisor advise staff about issues impacting their safety and security and what to do in an emergency, including those mentioned in the UN Security Plan as it relates to UNICEF, draft security-related information and instructions are provided.
- Building security networks and partnerships
- Assist the supervisor in choosing the proper UNSMS/NGO community liaison through UNDSS.
- Knowledge management, innovation, and capacity building
- Recognize, record, summarize, and disseminate lessons learned for knowledge development and to increase stakeholders’ capacity.
- Implement measures to increase capacity to improve customers’ and stakeholders’ knowledge of security-related operations and readiness.

- It is necessary to have a first-year university degree in one of the following fields: Security risk management, international relations, intelligence analysis, conflict and security, diplomatic studies, counterterrorism, or another comparable technical subject.
- It is necessary to have at least one (1) year of relevant professional experience in security analysis or global security risk management.
- Experience managing international security operations and knowledge of the UN Security Management System are highly desired.
- Work experience in a developing country and/or acquaintance with emergencies are regarded as assets.
- English proficiency is necessary. It is advantageous to have knowledge of a local language or another official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish.
