The Nikon Small World Competition was first established in 1975 as a way to honour and commend the work of those engaged in light microscope photography. Since that time, Small World has developed into a premier exhibition space for photomicrographers from the broadest range of scientific fields.

The 37th annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition’s new category, films shot under a microscope, was introduced by Nikon in 2011. Small World in Motion, a brand-new category that has been added to the competition, including any movie or digital time-lapse picture that was taken via a microscope. The competition’s movie category is judged and honoured separately, with first, second, and third place awards.
Any form of light microscopy technique, including phase contrast, polarised light, fluorescence, interference contrast, darkfield, confocal, deconvolution, and combined techniques, is welcome at Nikon. An independent panel of judges, who are renowned authorities in the fields of photography and photomicrography, evaluates the submissions made to Nikon. These submissions are evaluated based on their originality, informational value, technical skill, and aesthetic impact.

Eligibility
- Only those with access to a light microscope and who are at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of entry are eligible to enter the Nikon Small World in Motion Video Competition (the “Competition”). The following people are ineligible to enter the competition: (a) employees of Nikon Instruments Inc., Shaw & Todd, Inc., their respective parent companies, and affiliated companies; and/or each such employee’s spouse, parents, siblings, and children; (b) the Competition Judges, regardless of the date of appointment; and/or (c) people engaged in (as a business owner). Where prohibited, participation in the competition and/or receipt of any prizes may be restricted or void.

The judges for Small World in Motion choose and rank the top prize winners.
- First Place: US $3,000
- Second Place: US $2,000
- Third Place: US $1,000
- Fourth Place: US$800
- Fifth Place: USD $600
- Honourable Mentions are each worth $100 USD. The Judges will choose how many Honourable Mention Prizes to award at their exclusive discretion.
A Visa gift card (the “Gift Card”) with the Prize’s value preloaded will be given as payment for each Prize. Visa is not affiliated with this competition in any way, not even as a sponsor. The Gift Card is subject to the relevant terms and conditions of Visa, which can include a use-by date. - Taxes and other fees of any type incurred in connection with the receipt and/or use of any Prizes are the exclusive responsibility of the Winners. Each Prize will be given to the registered Entrant who won it in full. Prizes will not be given to, divided between, or distributed among several people.
Application
(a) Follow the links and instructions to complete the Competition entry form (the “Entry Form”), including your name, telephone number, email address, a valid home address (P.O. Boxes are not permitted), country, the school, institution or other organization the Entrant is affiliated with (the “Affiliation”) and the address of such Affiliation, the type, make, and model of the equipment used to capture the entry(ies) submitted to this Competition, a description of each video submitted, and other information requested by Sponsor (collectively, the “Registration Information”);
(b) Upload up to three (3) photomicrographic videos taken by the Entrant (collectively, the “Videos”) to the Entry Form.
(c) Indicate your agreement with these Official Rules and that Sponsor may contact Entrant regarding this Competition using any of the Registration Information submitted on the Entry Form, by checking the box displayed on the Entry Form and submitting the Entry Form together with all Registration Information and Videos.
