The Call for Applications: Mitacs Awards 2023! is now on. The Mitacs Awards, now in their 13th year, are one of Canada’s most prestigious celebrations of innovation. Live coverage of the ceremony will come from Ottawa, Ontario’s National Arts Centre.

The prize categories are as follows:

  • Awarded to a student or postdoctoral fellow who has shown a dedication to building an inclusive innovation ecosystem, dismantling obstacles, and opening doors for marginalised and Indigenous populations in Canada. Mitacs Award for Inclusive Innovation. This award aims to honour research accomplishments that promote social inclusion, take into account various viewpoints, and give accessibility top priority in the design and implementation of innovative projects, products, and services. It also aims to recognise the contributions of equity-deserving groups within the innovation ecosystem. A student or postdoctoral fellow who has made a noteworthy contribution to research and innovation through global collaboration during a Mitacs-funded Globalink or Accelerate International project is given the Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — International.
  • A master’s student is given the Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation if they have made a noteworthy contribution to research or innovation during their Mitacs-funded project.
  • PhD student who has made a substantial contribution to research and innovation during their Mitacs-funded study is given the Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation.
  • Presented to a postdoctoral colleague who has made a noteworthy contribution to research and innovation during their Mitacs-funded project, the Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Postdoctoral. The Mitacs Award for Commercialization is given to a student or postdoctoral fellow for a research-based idea that has already been commercialised or has a good chance of doing so in the near future. The Mitacs Award for Exceptional Leadership — Professor is given to an academic supervisor who has demonstrated excellence in creating partnerships with business and other partners, giving interns beneficial research and training opportunities, and starting research projects with noteworthy outcomes thanks to Mitacs funding.
  • The Mitacs Award for Exceptional Leadership — Industry is given to a Mitacs industry partner who has demonstrated excellence in fostering partnerships, giving interns worthwhile research and training opportunities, and starting research projects with noteworthy outcomes thanks to Mitacs funding.Participants in approved programmes from colleges, polytechnics, and universities may nominate themselves for these prize categories.

Eligibility

Candidates may be former or current Mitacs Accelerate, Elevate, Global Link, or Business Strategy Internship participants as well as postdoctoral fellows and academic supervisors.


Nomination

One of the following methods can be used to nominate students or postdoctoral fellows for a Mitacs Award:

  • by the professor who oversaw their work on the Mitacs-funded initiative;
  • By the professional mentor who oversaw their work on the Mitacs-funded project (for candidates for the Accelerate, Elevate, or Business Strategy Internship programmes).


For the Mitacs Award for Exceptional Leadership, professors may be nominated by:

The co-investigators from academia, the partners from business or nonprofit organisations, and the interns who participated in the Mitacs-funded project on which they collaborated.
On Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 11:00 p.m. ET, nominations must be submitted.
