About the Organization
Sharjah Art Foundation activities and events take place all year long and are held in Sharjah’s historic art and heritage areas. They include exhibitions of the work of Arab and international artists, performances, music, film screenings, and artist talks, as well as extensive art education programs for kids, adults, and families. The Sharjah Biennial is presented by the Foundation every two years, and it also organizes the yearly March Meeting.
Regarding the Grant
The Publishing Grant requests project applications from cultural producers including academics who study art and culture, writers, editors, translators, independent publishers, collectives, and non-profit organizations. We look for initiatives that promote the development of novel concepts and critical thinking as well as publications that take an experimental and cutting-edge approach to publishing.
A total of 30,000 USD will be given by Sharjah Art Foundation to a number of grantees to support initiatives that stand out for their conceptual, visual, and material merits. Each project’s grant request cannot total more than $15,000 USD.
Standards of Evaluation
- Realistic goals and a schedule are essential for feasibility. The undertaking must be finished in time for the Focal Point, the annual art book fair hosted by the Sharjah Art Foundation, in 2024.
- Content: We encourage an experimental and/or research-based approach to a range of art-related topics and media, including but not limited to artist zines, comics, graphic novels, published reprints, critical texts, artist writings, and storytelling.
- We value projects that are non-commercial, independent, or that act as catalysts for advancing research on an understudied topic or that support diversity of thought, authorship, and radical forms of public engagement. Impact: We value projects that have the potential to provide new understandings of publishing practices outside of mainstream publishing.
- Capacity: Applicants must be able to demonstrate prior knowledge and the capacity to complete the project successfully by securing access to resources not covered by the grant application.
