The program seeks to educate African academics who are in the middle of their careers in the areas of thought leadership, team building, engagement, and cooperation in order to equip them with the skills necessary to address the complex problems that both Africa and the rest of the world are currently grappling with.

Program for leadership:

  • Identifies early- to mid-career academics with a demonstrated capacity for leadership and a keen interest in acquiring essential leadership abilities
  • Encourages students to use their newfound abilities on tasks that have a bearing on the advancement of education on the continent and the social effects of that development
  • Establishes a network of academic experts throughout the continent that crosses discipline and national barriers as well as national limits.
  • Promotes the creation of an academic leadership program that may be applied in universities in Africa and elsewhere.

System Structure

The curriculum will employ a very participatory teaching method, skill application to a leadership project, peer support, and mentorship. From December 1–5, 2023 (departing on December 6), Fellows will participate in an initial 5-day, intense on-site training course in Pretoria, South Africa. Theory, application, and reflection will all be used in turn during the process. The participants will be pushed to work together to develop projects that establish a new paradigm for African science.

The instruction will cover:

  • Key components of group leadership
  • systems thinking and creativity
  • creation of powerful networks
  • Participation of stakeholders in change
  • maximizing the effectiveness and impact of teamwork
  • superior speech and communication abilities
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills that work
  • Fellows will put their talents to use after their initial training in a particular area or project pertinent to their environment.
  • Projects will try to support a new scientific paradigm for Africa as previously said.
  • Participants will continue to interact with the group throughout the year and have access to professional support. Fellows will finish their ideas in 2024 and present them during the second training, which will last for three days.

Cost

The majority of training, travel, food, and lodging expenses will be paid for.

Eligibility

  • applicant should have a PhD or a comparable degree;
  • occupy an academic job or a position requiring ongoing research in a research institution;
  • presently engaged in both teaching and research in a higher education or research institution in Africa;
  • a history of consistently doing excellent scientific work;
  • a desire to translate and share the findings of their research to have an impact on society;
  • demonstrated leadership skills in research and other fields; interest in how research might be used to address difficult societal problems;
  • a desire for cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral collaborations (business, government, etc.);
  • Dedication to taking part in all fellowship events, as well as a desire to share what they have learnt with their larger networks.

Expected Engagement

Candidates committed to strengthening leadership in Africa are sought by the ASLP. The two multi-day training sessions are a time commitment necessary for the program itself. Fellows will also be required to work on their leadership project and interact with other fellows for peer support.
There will be some charges that are not covered by the program, such as visa application fees, immunization costs, and local travel expenses, for which you may need to ask your local institution for assistance or raise money on your own dime.

Application

Every applicant must provide two recommendation letters from academic experts (details are included in the application form). Make sure the letters of support are sent from an institutional email address that has been approved. If the candidate is accepted into the program, one of the two referees must agree to take part in mentorship and future communications. This referee will be aware of the fellow’s development and ought to be prepared to help the fellow if necessary.

The University of Pretoria, the Global Young Academy, national young academies, and ASLP Management representatives will each examine and shortlist submissions. The ASLP Management team will make the final choice of candidates.
