Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 ENCATC Research Award on Cultural Policy and Cultural Management. With a focus on its practical applications, this distinguished award strives to encourage scholarly investigation into cultural management and policy. The ENCATC Research Award also aims to aid in the development of a network of academics capable of carrying out ground-breaking research initiatives in cultural management and policy.
The annual ENCATC Research Award is given to a newly published PhD thesis that examines current concerns and transitions from evaluative (descriptive) research approaches to creative and globally focused ones. A PhD thesis that can aid in policy development and help practitioners in the broad field of culture is also rewarded.
A fairly broad definition of culture is employed for this research award, starting with the arts, cultural heritage, and culture and creative sectors. The field of cultural management and/or policy should be addressed in doctoral theses submitted in response to the call.
Eligibility
- Candidates may be from any country in the world and of any nationality.
- Candidates may be young or in-demand scholars who have recently (up to two years) successfully defended their PhD theses and hold a cum laude or another degree of the highest caliber available in the higher education system of the relevant nation.
- The field of cultural management and/or policy must be involved in the doctoral thesis submitted in response to the call.
- Any language may be used to submit a doctoral thesis. The candidate must, however, give a lengthy English summary.
- Except for content published with the express written consent of the copyright owners and/or content in the public domain, any work submitted for review must be original. This work may not have been previously published in whole or in part in any way. The work can, however, be made accessible upon request through a national library or a university website.
- The work that is being evaluated must not violate or infringe on any copyright, license, or other rights that are already in place.
- Candidates may only apply once.
Assessment Standards
The evaluation standards will be based on:
Thematic area, high caliber of the study and technique, originality of the research question, inventiveness of the research design, applicability and motivation to the field or to policy makers;
Research with an international and comparative perspective; excellent writing.

- CV
- a resume letter
- original doctoral thesis table of contents and a link to the entire text
- A 3,000 word, English-language summary of the PhD thesis that includes
- Study’s purpose and its research questions
- theoretical foundation
- ethical issues, data gathering and analysis, and methodological techniques
- Principal findings of the study
- contributions to the realm of cultural management and/or policy, both theoretical and practical
- main sources
- letters of reference from two university jury/adjudicating board members who took part in the public defense process
- The system will automatically reject applications that are not complete, do not satisfy the requirements, or do not follow the application procedure.
