The Pulitzer Center AI Accountability Fellowships for 2023–2024 are now accepting applications. The goal of the Al Accountability Fellowships is to assist journalists who are working on in-depth stories about AI accountability that look at how governments and businesses use surveillance and predictive technologies to make decisions about policing, healthcare, social welfare, the criminal justice system, hiring, and other areas.

Grant Summary

They work to assist reporters and news organizations that accurately reflect the variety of communities impacted by AI technologies. The Fellowship is intended for journalists across all beats, desks, and formats who want to deepen, widen, and diversify their coverage of artificial intelligence via an accountability lens.

The reporting project that journalists want to work on during their Fellowship must be included in their application. They support enterprise and accountability programs that investigate the actual effects of algorithms on policy, people, and communities using a range of techniques, such as data analysis, records requests, and shoe-leather reporting.

The Fellowship helped 10 Fellows report in 10 different countries during its inaugural year. The AI Accountability Fellows class of 2022 presented research on issues important to equity and human rights, including how AI is affecting the gig economy, social welfare, policing, migration, and border control.

Although they encourage projects on a wide range of topics related to the effects of AI on society, they are putting a particular emphasis on some issues this year. The Pulitzer Center is looking to fund at least one study that explores how AI and conflict, war, and peace are related.

They are also seeking participants for a project that, in collaboration with Princeton University’s Digital Witness Lab, focuses on the influence WhatsApp, a messaging app, has on local public debate. We strongly encourage applicants who have reporting initiatives planned on these subjects to apply.
