Applications are currently being accepted for the Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards 2023. Emerging African scholars researching various facets of violence on or directly related to the African continent. Are recognized through the Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards (formerly the Harry Frank Guggenheim Young African Scholars).

The Foundation chooses a group of Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellows every two years. For projects that were deemed to be of high quality and directly related to the Foundation’s interest in violence, about a dozen young researchers were honored.

The Foundation seeks submissions for the African Fellow Awards from any social and natural sciences. Or related fields that have the potential to advance knowledge of the origins, consequences, and management of aggressiveness and violence. Research with the potential to better understand. And address pressing issues of aggressiveness and violence in contemporary society is always a priority. The suggested idea must directly benefit the continent of Africa.

Interest Areas

The Foundation is concerned about violence in connection with a variety of issues, including but not limited to:
  • War\sCrime\sTerrorism
  • Relationships with family and intimate partners
  • battle for natural resources and a changing climate
  • Conflict that is racial, ethnic, and religious
  • Nationalism and political extremism

The Foundation funds studies that look at the fundamental processes that lead to violence. Although priority is given to ideas that persuade policymakers of the applicability of any prospective discoveries. Likewise, historical analysis is taken into account to the extent that it is pertinent to the violence that is occurring right now. Examining the results of violence is only relevant for a proposal. If it can be demonstrated convincingly that these effects act as catalysts for other acts of violence in the future.

Fellowship

Individual academics can apply for fellowships that last for two years. The African Fellow Awards include;

  • a $10,000 fieldwork research grant,
  • a $10,000 methods workshop on the African continent,
  • mentoring from senior African and Africanist scholars,
  • travel funding to present research findings at an international conference,
  • and editorial and publication support through a writing workshop designed to encourage and
  •  train scholars to write for and submit to international peer-reviewed journals and other outlets for their research.

Eligibility

  • Citizens of any nation may apply for the fellowship.
  • They must be under 40 years old.
  • Living on the continent and presently enrolled in an approved Ph.D. Program at an African higher education institution.

Application

According to the program application cycle, the March 1 application deadline occurs every other year. To access the application, users must first register. There are also the application guidelines available.
