For the 2023 African Union Internship Program, applications are now being accepted. Qualified individuals from various academic areas have the chance to get professional exposure within the AU through the full-time AU internship program.

The program seeks to develop participants’ personal and professional abilities. And expose them to the operations of the AU at an early stage of their professional careers. It gives participants a chance to practice their skills in a variety of relevant professions while learning about other cultures. Participants who are adequately knowledgeable and skilled in the subject matter will lend their support to the AU and possibly act as a breeding ground for future African leaders.

Focus Regions

Interns generally provide with administrative and technical support for the efficient implementation of African Union projects, programs, and activities in the departments and directorates listed below:

  • Cabinet of the Vice-Chairman
  • Blue Economy, Sustainable Environment, Agriculture, Rural Development (ARBE), Trade, Industry, and Mining (ETIM)
  • Science, technology, education, and innovation (ESTI)
  • Facilities and Energy (IE)
  • Politics, stability, and security (PAPS)
  • Humanitarian aid, health, and social development (HHS)
  • Manage Human Resources (HRM)
  • Enterprise Resource Planning, Operations Support Services, Management Information Systems Division (ERP)
  • Management of Conferences and Publications (CMP)
  • Citizens and the Diaspora Office for Safety and Security Services (CIDO)
  • Financial Control for Medical and Health Services Office of Strategic Planning and Delivery
  • Internal Oversight Office (OIO)
  • Ethics, Integrity, and Standards for Quality Assurance and Control
  • Office of the Commission’s Secretary Office of the Counsel (OLC)
  • Women, Gender, and Youth Office of Protocol Partnership and Resource Mobilization (WGY)
  • Secretariat of the Information and Communication Peace Fund
  • A New Partnership for Development in Africa (NEPAD)

Eligibility for The 2023 African Union (AU) Internship Program for Young Africans

The following individuals may apply to the program:

  • Citizens of the member nations of the African Union;
  • Graduates from an accredited institution of higher learning, or students studying full-time in postgraduate or undergraduate study (in their final year of study);
  • Being fluent in one of the official working languages of the AU (Kishwahili, Arabic, English, French, or one of the four
  • At the time of application, between the ages of 22 and 32.

Rules and Regulations

  • The AU will not have any financial obligations to interns; they will be responsible for making their own travel plans, paying for housing, and covering living costs.
  • In order to help the interns secure their entry and residency permits, AU will make a reasonable effort.
  • There will be no travel reimbursement for interns.
  • The three (3) month internship will only be approved once for each candidate, and it will only be renewed once.
  • Medical travel or medical evacuation to and from the internship site at the expense of the Commission is not something that interns are entitled to. As a result, interns must obtain personal insurance coverage for the whole internship.

Please submit the following document to internship@africa-union.org if you are a candidate interested in applying for an internship with the African Union Commission.

  • a letter of inspiration outlining their goals for the internship program
  • a replica of a current passport or national identification card
  • certified duplicates of the necessary academic credentials
  • CV currently in effect (CV)
  • letter of recommendation for an internship from the place of higher learning they are enrolled in
  • Candidates must register for an account on the AU Careers portal.

In addition to their online application, applicants must submit the following supporting documents:

  • a letter of inspiration outlining their goals for the internship program
  • a replica of a current passport or national identification card
  • certified duplicates of the necessary academic credentials
  • CV currently in effect (CV)
  • letter of recommendation for an internship from the place of higher learning they currently attend.
  • Applicants will receive an email confirmation after submitting their application successfully.
