A call for applications for its In-Residence Advanced Academia Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences for the years 2022–2023 has been released by the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS Sofia). (Advanced Academic Fellowships at CAS Sofia for International Scholars 2022–2023)

Objectives

CAS Sofia is a private institute with a global and interdisciplinary focus. It encourages top-tier research in the humanities and social sciences and is based in Sofia, Bulgaria. Outstanding scholars are invited by CAS Sofia to work on their own research projects during in-residence periods of up to five months, in addition to funding focus-group research.

The invited Fellows work on projects of their own choosing while engaging in the intellectual life and scholarly community of the Centre (Bulgarian and international fellows). Fellows benefit from the Center’s extensive worldwide networks, international seminar- and guest-lecturer program, and substantial material and intellectual assistance. CAS Sofia offers assistance to Fellows with all logistical issues relating to travel, housing, and research in Sofia.

Conditions for Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be not a citizen of Bulgaria;
  • have a PhD in the humanities or social sciences; having participated in projects or refereed conferences; and having publications in scholarly journals that have undergone peer review are all big pluses.
  • EFFECTIVE LANGUAGE
  • Since CAS is an international academic institution, the majority of its work is done in English, which is also the language used in the seminars for fellow students. Consequently, having a solid grasp of English is necessary.

Benefits

Post-doctoral non-Bulgarian scholars can get in-residence grants from two to five months in length from CAS Sofia. Both junior and senior scholars are encouraged to apply.

The chosen Fellows are entitled to: An allowance of 800 Euros per month* (subject to 10% income tax) to support living costs during their stay in Sofia.

Accommodations in Sofia that provide a place to live and work. The CAS library and online databases are also accessible to Fellows without charge. Travel reimbursement, up to 400 euros; and Research costs (up to 500 Euro).

Time and Situation

Candidates may submit applications for two times:

From October 1, 2022, until February 28, 2023 (Winter semester)

2023 March 1 – 2023 July 31 (Summer semester)

Note that the rating of the application and the desired period determine the final invitation for the fellowship. The applicant has an advantage if they are available for both times. If you have a preference for one period over the other, please specify it on the application form.
