Leiden University Excellence Scholarships (LexS)

Brief explanation:

Outstanding non-EEA/non-EFTA students enrolled in a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University are eligible for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS).

All Leiden University full-time master’s programs, with the exception of the LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at the Leiden Law School.

The amount and kind of scholarships awarded relies on the funding made available to each faculty department.

Scholarship amount and length:

Three prizes are offered by the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program:

• The tuition charge of € 10.000; the tuition fee of € 15.000; the total tuition fee less the mandatory tuition fee.

The LExS does not offer full financial aid. Non-EEA LExS recipients are still need to show “evidence of sufficient money” with their application for a student visa or residence permit.

Eligibility:

  • Students must have received top grades in their prior coursework that are pertinent to the Master’s degree they are applying for. The fact that the student graduated in the top 10% of his or her previous study program is an evidence of this. Note that this information is only provided to show the level of competition; verification of ranking is not necessary.
  • With the exception of students applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programs or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, for which there are no nationality restrictions, applicants must have a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport and may not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering).

*All member states of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

Application guidelines:

To be considered for admission to a Master’s program at Leiden University, you must first apply online. You must attach your letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship and make it clear in your application that you are applying for the LExS scholarship under the scholarship area. Programs beginning in September have a deadline of 1 February, whereas those beginning in February have a deadline of 1 October.
