Google.org Impact Challenge on Climate Innovation: $30 million in funding for large-scale projects

Deadline: November 30, 2022

For large bet projects that speed up technical advancements in climate knowledge and action, the Google.org Impact Challenge on Climate Innovation has pledged $30 million in funding. To hasten the transition to a more robust and sustainable future, chosen organizations may be granted access to Google’s technical know-how and products as well as money of up to $5M.

About the Challenge

At Google, we think that collaboration is key to making progress toward resolving an issue as significant and urgent as climate change.

We wish to aid nonprofits, professionals, and groups working globally to increase knowledge and action related to climate change. We are searching for solutions that will enable collective climate action and help the international community understand previously obscure climate concerns. Previous Google.org-funded projects have restored ecosystems, mapped emissions on a global scale, and made it possible for small enterprises to comprehend their carbon footprint.

Eligibility requirements

  • The Google.org Impact Challenge (GIC) is an open invitation to nonprofit organizations, social entrepreneurs, academic institutions, and research organizations worldwide to submit their ideas for projects that advance climate knowledge and action. In addition to $5M USD in cash, chosen organizations will also have access to Google’s technical knowledge and products.
  • Any non-profit charity, other non-profit organization, university or research facility, whether public or private, or for-profit social entrepreneurship company with a project that has a stated philanthropic aim is eligible to participate in the challenge. Your nation of residence must be the registered office for your organization. The so-called Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR), the Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR), Syria, Cuba, Iran, and North Korea, as well as organizations and projects in those nations, are not eligible to apply. Sadly, those without a connection to an organization are not eligible.

The Google.org Impact Challenge on Climate Innovation application period will end on November 30, 2022.

Application requirements

Ambition

We are searching for innovative ideas that could have a big global impact. Even if your proposal doesn’t have to instantly affect millions of people throughout the world, you should explain how it might eventually do so. Since coalitions may be useful for attaining the scope of solutions we’re seeking to support, we encourage cooperation amongst various organizations.

Impact

Projects should have a real-world, measurable impact on both people and the environment. The plan should detail how it will address climate change and/or how much it will assist others in doing the same. Applications that are successful will be supported by data and research.

Innovative technology utilization

Ideas should make use of technology by inventing or enabling fresh ways and solutions. Applications can also suggest creative uses for currently available technology; AI and machine learning-based approaches are encouraged!

Feasibility

Successful proposals will have carefully thought out execution plans that are supported by the tools and knowledge required for implementation. We seek out teams with the necessary skills to carry out the suggested project because tackling large, scalable ideas with technology at their core is challenging.
