The Africans Rising Activist of the Year award is an annual award to recognize an individual (activist) for their social justice work to bring positive change to the lives of Africans on the continent and/or in the diaspora.

African activists and movements profiled and advanced, and their activism as a means of bringing about positive change in African communities highlighted through the Africans Rising Activism Awards. This award initiative seeks to encourage similar actions among other members of civil society on the continent and in the diaspora by showcasing activism as a deserving cause in African society through the examples of award nominees and recipients.

Three prizes presented as part of the 2022 Africans Rising Activism Awards program to honour African activism. These include:

ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR

  • The Africans Rising Activist of the Year award is an annual award to recognize an individual (activist) for their social justice work to bring positive change to the lives of Africans on the continent and/or in the diaspora.

MOVEMENT OF THE YEAR

  • The Africans Rising Movement of the Year award is an annual award to recognize a movement, collective or organization for their social justice work to bring positive change to the lives of Africans on the continent and/or in the diaspora.

ARTISTIC ACTIVIST OF THE YEAR

  • This Africans Rising Artistic Activist of the Year award is a new award that  recognizes artists on the continent and/or in the diaspora who use their art to promote positive social change to the lives of Africans.
Eligibility Criteria of Nomination

To qualify as a nominee for the Africans Rising Activist of the Year Award. A nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • The nominee must be African
  • The nominee must be a member of Africans Rising
  • The nominee must be 35 years or younger
  • The nominee’s activism must demonstrate their on issues of social justice
  • The nominee’s work must be non-violent
  • The nominee must be able to provide evidence of their social justice work for a minimum of two years

To qualify as a nominee for the Africans Rising Movement of the Year Award. A nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • The organization must be founded and led by Africans or African descendants
  • The organization must be a member of Africans Rising*
  • The organization must be involved in grassroots activities
  • The organization’s accomplishments must demonstrate its work on issues of social justice
  • The organization’s work must be non-violent
  • The organization must be able to provide evidence of their social justice work for a minimum of two years

To qualify as a nominee for the Africans Artistic Activist of the Year Award. A nominee must meet the following criteria:

  • The nominee must be African
  • If the work is expressed in a language other than English or French, the nominee must provide a translation of the work in English or French
  • The nominee must be a member of Africans Rising*
  • The nominee must be between the ages of 18 – 35 years or younger
  • The nominee’s creative work must be related to issues of social justice
  • The nominee’s work must promote non-violent activism
  • The nominee must be able to provide evidence of their social justice work for a minimum of two years
Award Timeline
  • Oct 31  – Nov 13  – Call for Nominations
  • Nov 14  – Nov 20 – Panel Review to Select Final Nominees
  • Nov 21 – 27 – Contacting nominees; Receiving nominee photos, videos, bios; Setting up voting platform
  • Nov 28 – Dec 11 – Final Voting Period
  • Week of Dec 12  –  Africans Rising Activism Awards – Virtual Awards Ceremony (Date to be finalised)
